I thought this was quite an interesting story - i don't eat too many mcdonalds (and can't say i ever have - it's one of those things which sometimes fills a hole on a long journey but other than that not too appealing) but i went to our local drive through to get 4 burger meals for my son and his mates and it came to over £40 which was a bit of surpise - it certainly wasn't anywhere that expensive the last time i went.

Mind you, all these chain places are taking the piss - like even a cup of coffee is over £6 now, i mean, i just refuse to pay that.

Just how long did McDonalds keep the introductory £2.88 Extra Value Meal going for? It seemed like a long period that they subsidised that price.

A cup of coffee is not £6. I got a large Toffee Latte from McDonalds yesterday (something I used to have all the time but hardly ever do now I have a Nespresso machine at home) and it was £2.99, up from the £2.39 I remember it being for ages.

That's the most expensive hot drink McDonalds do, I believe.

Starbucks do have some promo/syruppy drinks which will nudge over £6 if you go for a 'venti' but a filter is still the right side of £3.

A large McDonalds burger meal with a large milkshake is probably a tenner+ now tho. It's certainly not the cheap bite it once was.

Greggs feels cheaper to me now than it did pre-pandemic, I guess perhaps they've shown a bit more forbearance.

I think McDonalds probably has the best value meal around with the wrap of the day (£1.99) and equivalent meal, usually around £4.09. I do wonder how long it will last! Other meals have gone up for sure, but it feels to me like KFC has seen the most significant price increases overall.

I think Burger King snuck their price rises in beforehand so it seems less bad now. You also get the unlimited refills... or at least nobody ever questions you using the freestyle machines endlessly.

Costa's food is extortionate now. The breakfast wrap is now £5.50 which means if you have that and a bog standard latte you're up at £9 which, to me, is airport money.

McDonalds also fudged their launch of their "breakfast muffin and drink deal" (aka a mcmuffin meal where you have to buy the hash brown separately) which made me v. cynical of their offers. The 3 for £3 is decent when you can find it on the app.

What's the view on the pret subscription btw? We're about to get three (3) Pret's in dundee and i'd have rinsed that coffee thing.

But at the same time, as someone who would only deal with pret on an occasional work trip (so Glasgow station / London) I got really annoyed at the dual food pricing. Even though I was expensing it it still annoyed me because it was eating into my amount that could get used for a late night twix. So on balance is probably is better.

The only loyalty programme I am part of is my Subcard at Subway (Its not a physical card, its an app), as I only really go to Subway for fast food, but the prices there are pretty stable right now, and they have been alright with offering deals on certain items.

Not surprised at McDonald's sales dropping. It's a complete waste of money.

There's so many independent burger (and other fast food) places popping up all over the place lately and they're all a league above McDonald's and not a million miles away in price. Massive change from 15 year ago when the only other burger you could get was the equivilant of something you'd expect from a tin.

Not to mention the likes of Jollibee, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Tim Horton, Popeyes, and so on, creeping in aswell which are mostly superior.

Mind how Subway makes money is a mystery everytime I see them they're empty and they're just overpriced. That said there's been a lot closing around here lately.

Really? I paid £8 for a breakfast footlong recently, that's double the price it was pre-Covid.
