I genuinely didn't think Salmond would step down - I thought that if he lost the referendum he would stick around to at least try and get at much as he could out of devolution.

Sturgeon would have a far better chance to push anything throw, She is the only to get disagree with him and get away with it.

Expect more changes..

I found Nicola Sturgeon even more annoying than Salmond as a person. Salmond had done worse things than be annoying as the First Minister, however, so I think the two cancel each other out.

Indeed rather ugly scenes in Glasgow, taking the no and yes banners and attaching them to the underlying sectarianism that still exists there. Yuck.

They're pointing in the bottom one at least. Top one you might have a point.

In any case Salmond picking and choosing which papers go to his press conferences smacks of wanting to control the press. I hate to think what would have happened if he ended up in charge.

Every political leader/party wants to control the press. That's what "spin" is all about.

If I were resigning of my own accord for reasons not related to a blunder of some sort I would probably choose who I wanted to take questions from...

Perhaps he would have set up a public body that would have actually done something to reign in the press in Scotland, rather than allow it to be the bilious pit of hatred, scaremongering, invasiveness and tittle-tattle it is now in GB.

Besides, it was just a presser to say he was going to leave. No different to Tom Bradby being the politicohack of choice in Downing Street / Buck House.

As for wanting to control the press, I'd look no further than your own party of choice, UKIP. If they were in charge, every paper would be like the Daily Express.
