Has anyone got any advice for smart phones in Tokyo, as I am off there for 10 days end of March. I am using the Samsung Omnia 7 on Orange.

Indeed, that's what I'm referring too. Whilst some of the content may not be sound, the dynamic content like weather, sport and what-not that reflects to where you are is quite nice.
What's it like for news? One of the criticisms I heard about it when it launched was that it was essentially a daily newspaper and didn't update as the day went on making it essentially a paper. And as it launched on a big news day this was particually noticable

Personally, although some may disregard it, I thought it was very nice.
It doesn't try to look like a newspaper, with it feeling more like a a magazine, although presented better than other magazine apps. The content also isn't that bad, and there's a lot of video and photo content to enhance it. In terms of pulling in latest news, it does it to an extent, like pulling Twitter feeds for your local sports team, but main content itself isn't always updated, although some was.
The killer thing for me though was the graphics. They accompanied many reports, from simple yet lovely graphics illustrating the line up of a baseball game, to graphics on major stories that enhanced the app incredibly, whilst working in a intuitive iPad only way.
And I didn't think 99 cents was that bad a price for a weekly subscription.
