Do the keywords have any real function or are they, just like the New sticker, so Web 2.0 right now?

Initially, the latter, but it might well be useful for categorising stuff from different users later, particularly if TVF users actually bother to use it.

So, a theoretical for you then. Let's say I was to upload a picture or somesuch and tag it accordingly, what happens to those tags? Are they still connected to the image and waiting for the day they can be searched, maybe even writ large in a tag cloud?

they sit in the database ready for us to come up with a use for them, and a tag cloud is currently number one possibility

I wouldn't discount the idea of a simple search box as well as a tag cloud but yay tag cloud eitherway.

My design philosophy (hah, well, random thought) was it'd be best to collect any data now so it can be used later. It'd be a massive ballache for people to add tagging data afterwards.

How is your tag gathering so far? I'd imagine you'd have some idea of what the ratio is of tagged content to non-tagged.
