A pensioner has defied an EU ban by hoarding more than 1,000 traditional light bulbs - enough to see her 'into the grave'.

Valerie Hemsley-Flint, 62, has spent more than £500 of her pension money stockpiling the old-style 100-watt bulbs.

She isn't really defying the ban in any case is she? She's merely buying them while she can.

I just don't understand this. I've never used a 100W bulb anywhere that I've lived (however, we did have several 500W halogens in the bar that we switched on at kicking out time - but that's a different story...) and can't see the need for them.

I've been used to low-energy bulbs for the past 20 years and had no problem with them. Sure, you can pick up the wrong warmth or get the wrong wattage comparisons - but nothing to make me think never to buy them again.

For sake of example, I bought a couple of 5W GE Candles for the bedside lamps that were too bluish (oddly) and a little dim, so I replaced them with a couple of 8W Tesco Spirals which gave a warmer, brighter light.

No need for any 100W tungsten bulbs - just a little experimentation - which is possible now that they're so cheap.

Which is probably fair enough, but then I do wonder how she gets through life without going somewhere with a strip light, Tv screen or LED style display.

There's a very clever bit of javascript on there, you'll note when you highlight a paragraph your browser's stop button will light up momentarily as there's a tiny ajaxy thing done all hidden from view. Rather impressive.

There is currently a loophole in the new ban...

From September 1, incandescent bulbs are outlawed from being imported to EU countries, to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

However the legislation only refers to "household lamps” and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has no power to ban the import or sale of the bulbs for "industrial use", which will still be available from specialists.

...I imagine the 'industrial use' bulb availability is limited compared to before the ban (ie. unlikely to be on sale in supermarkets). Still it does suggest the pensioner didn't need to spend £500 buying light bulbs.

I always buy my bulbs and similar things from Wilts Wholesale Electric (very good value, branches all over southern England, not just wholesale, open to the public), so I'll ask for an industrial 100w bulb next time I'm in and see what they say.

intriguing, but how do they append it to tHe clipboard? I thought all modern browsers security model denied writing to the clipboard without user confirmation.
