I heard a good adage the other month: Linux is only free if your time is worthless. Shame really, but true for everyone but the enterprise IT people. Can't see it ever being big on the desktop despite things like Ubuntu, because the things that even windows gets right (like it not totally freezing when you change the graphics cards instead of dropping to VGA mode) STILL aren't done.

Originally it said "I've never owned a Mac, only PCs...." I edited it incorrectly when I realised I'd said that in the next paragraph. I have since edited it again, Nini.
You slipped in with your post before I had done that!

OK then, you're still a very confusing person.

I hear that one quite a lot, things along the lines: "I've never used a mac and people who use macs are twats", but I'd suggest they take the next opportunity to sit down with one and try and appreciate the differences. Mrtoms actually did a nice piece of writing when he bought his software developing dad a mac mini as an experiment:

Obviously it's a bit biased! He actually showed me a modern mac (I'd not actually sat down at one since the 90s before that) in 2005 and I have to say that was a bit of a turning point in my opinion of these "idiot boxes" as I'd come to regard them.

We had a similar thing at our Sixth form, we had several rooms full of up to date networked Hewlett Packard PCs with the latest version of Windows XP on them, and we had one Mac in a tiny room which was only used for Media Studies A-Level. I used it a couple of times for Video editing, it was okay and had no problems with the video editor program, I really didn't see what all the fuss was about, I find PC's alot easier to use, but saying that I've always used PC's, I guess I must be one of those who don't see the appeal of Macs.

I've used them. I had a G4 for several months to play with before my company flogged it. I used a fair bit of Final Cut Pro and other graphics programs.
The one thing I was expecting to find was a handling of video which made my pc pale in comparison and I didn't find it. FCP was only as good as my pc, not better, and even then the preview video was grainy and sluggish, where it isn't on my dual-core 4GB (sub £400) pc.
I found it counter-intuitive in many ways - such as dropping programs onto the desktop and not "installing" them. And some of the limited software made the OS roll back, emulator style, to a compatible version.
Two bits of software I wanted were unique to Mac. A real-time DV video mixer program and a "soundtrack creator" program. Both have subsequently arrived on the pc and I'm more than happy.
The most impressive graphic I saw on the Mac was the screensaver.
To top it all my internet naughtyness was stymied by not being able to run java apps or play certain video.
Total pants.

I know not of this compatability thing so will take your word (I'm relatively recent I suppose!) for it. Certainly the initial compatbility layer they put in when they went to intel was abysmal - office for the old processers ran slower on new machines than on older ones. As for the rest, I do wonder if it was under-specced for what it was trying to do. Unless you're talking dual G4 with stacks of RAM then there's no wonder it was outperformed by a dual core PC.
I shall have to once again say "before my time" about Java and video too. No problems these days certainly.

It was pulled out an edit suite from a events company who went bust, so I don't think it was underspec'd.
And maybe things are better now (as of course they are for pcs too), but that was my experience. For me its legitimised by the lack of negative experience with my selection of pcs and laptops.
But I appreciate that everyone's experience is their own.
I just don't like smug folk, is all.

my idiot best mate had a G4 laptop which I had to fix due to his complete idiocy. I found macs infuriating to use, I disliked the file manager immensely, the system for getting his broadband USB modem working was ghastly and I found things such as the lack of maximise the the dock very very annoying and clumsy.
In addition to this the screen on it was poor compared to other laptops (of that vintage) I had used and I just did not find anything that wowed me compared to my PC. The exception being the aforementioned wireless networking which is flawless, esp compared to that in XP (vista's one is better, but still a bit rubbish).
If I had money to burn, I'd burn it in the face of that horrible tramp outside the kebab shop, and then I'd consider getting a macbook and putting windows on it. Just to smugly annoy mac plebs who come over the ooze their slime at me.

One question Gav then as I'm not wholly tolerant of either stripe of smug git myself, is cdd a smug git for liking Windows as he does? I'd say he is to a similar extent as smug as other smug types but what do you think?
