I'm assuming you were joking there! :?

A similar misconception befell those who tried the previously trusted method of sticking their head into a gas oven (obviously with the gas turned on). Unfortunately for them, when "natural gas" replaced "town gas" in the 1970s this couldn't be relied upon as it wasn't so toxic and would disperse easier. Of course a few would subsequently change their minds after discovering themselves still alive many hours later; although their immediate decision to "celebrate" their change of heart with a cigarette changed the result somewhat

Are you coming on MSN Stuart,or are you manning the phones at Samaritans tonight?

Unfortunately dealing with peoples problems (and the inability to discuss work outside of the office) did lead to the development of a rather "dark" sense of humour amongst the group.

I do remember the case of one lady who was about to be transferred to a private company (as many were) and changed her mind at the last minute. She hounded me at the office for hours on end each day threatening to commit suicide. Whilst I managed to stop myself from following the team's suggestion to offer her a lift to the Tamar Bridge 2 miles away, I must confess to checking tide times on the internet (in a moment of desparation) to ensure that she wouldn't have suffered by being stuck in the low tide mud for hours!
