I think it's natural for mothers to tend to be protective of their sons and for fathers to tend to be protective of their daughters, but I don't think that constitutes favourtism. Can't say I've ever favoured one parent over the other, nor have I ever felt that I've been favoured/not favoured by one parent over the other.
Your probably right, but you may also find every family is different - especially from their own backgrounds and own, erm, methods.
