There's a weird relationship between TVF and MP247.

Ultimately, we rely on TVF for our trafiic - we need them to get you guys here.

I don't know Asa at all, so I don't know if he takes this sort of thread as a personal attack. I've often wondered how far he would have to be pushed to break the links between the sites.

Is he interested in TVF anymore? Would MP247 survive if it was ditched by TVF?

Wooooahhhh... better point out I didn't mean to write that. Quiet, yes. Invisible, I have no idea why I wrote that. You know what I'm getting at...

To be a mod, you should be fair and balanced without being Fox News. I'd say my qualities are more suited to being a mod than yours, to put it bluntly. You enjoy the attention and playing up to things. Yet I have been here as long as you, have contributed as much sensible discussion, but have chosen not to be the character that you are.

Don't get me wrong - I like you very much and enjoy you being around, but I don't see why you deserve to be a mod. I have absolutely no idea why you feel it is in some way your right or that you are disappointed in not being asked. Just have a look at how many people are around this place, and explain why you in particular stand on some higher platform.

People getting higher than their station in real life is bad enough, let alone on something that exists only in cyberspace.

I'm in a harsh mood tonight, ladies and gentlemen. But he knows I like him, so hey.
And you've missed my point, Dan.

Basically, what I'm saying is that I've suggested ideas for improving things for four years and until I'm blue in the face.

I have no desire to be a mod, but when I see a website that has been part of my almost daily life for nearly half a decade going downhill faster than mdta on his way to a well-known fast food outlet, I get a bit frustrated with the typically British way of doing things slack-jaw and with no enthusiasm.

I'm saying that things need to be changed, otherwise we should just forget about it and let it fester away into a slow death littered with trolls.

I remember there was outrage when I suggested a couple of years ago that there should be a minimum age for users. I suggested 15 was an acceptable age for users, but I was lambasted for being "age-ist"!
And that I completely agree with.

To be fair, my comments were directed at your first post which sad you pondered why you hadn't been asked to mod, and the thread title, "Power eludes me"!

Warning: I'm in one of those chatty moods tonight.

Well I visit TV Forum pretty much every day and am quick to notice trolls, I see both sides of a story and can usually decide what is best for all. I have a filthy sense of humour and I can admit to any mistakes I may have made. I'm good at cleaning, I'm great with kids, and I make a great apple pie. I vote me for moderator!

What? No free Creme Eggs? Count me out then.

Seriously, I think what makes a good moderator is someone that can contribute greatly to the forum, being a very friendly person, thick-skinned (but not stuck up), and being able to resolve situations without having to use the banning powers, unless absolutely necessary. Choosing words carefully in heated situations is really very important, and people don't need reminding that you're a mod. Sometimes it's best to stay calm and constantly use polite words to bring a person back to your level, other times it'll be right to show authority and give a final clear request to calm down before banning the member or members temporarily - a short time to cool down could be all it needs.

A new moderator is bound to cause some jealousy from members - especially those that have been around for a long while, which is why I think it's important for the new mod to try his or her best to continue coming across as just a member and not a moderator, especially for the first few months. Probably easier said than done.

Here ends lesson one in my "How Not To Mod" series. Leaflets containing top tips on how to relax, and also a recipe for Lee's famous chocolate chip cookies and sausage rolls will be available as you leave the forum. The book "How Not To Mod" will be out in May. Thankyou.

P.S. I would be slightly against a minimum age unless an exception was made for Lloyd/LadUK. I'm all for a minimum IQ for members though!

That's a damn good idea, and the best thing is - IT COULD WORK!

On the signup page, all members must achieve an IQ higher than 90 to join the forum.

That will root out the dimwit trolls who only join out of boredom and to cause a fuss.

Having an IQ test to join the forum would make it seem exclusive. Yay!

Before I start, none of this is mean't at you directly Jamez - I'm talking in general terms. :)

I was running a reasonable successful forum about a year ago and I had the fantastic job of choosing a new mod. It is hell.

You need to get someone that you can trust, having a loose cannon just isn't acceptable as they put a foot wrong, all hell breaks loose and the admins workloads goes up.

I had a mod who (unknown to us) was editing old posts, so that they argee with him. Simply removing the ending of words or adding them. He'd edit posts to "fix the appauling grammer".. too etc..

I remember searching for something, and I came across my (edited) post.. I was sitting for about ten minutes scratching my head thinking "I'm sure I didn't say that..I really would never say that.." and that's when I remembered a few others mentioning this to me.. I installed a mod in the admin panel whereby it listed all the actions taken by a mod.. and sure enough a week later it was filled by this name and "edited post"..

So choosing a mod is difficult, and not always the best person wins.

So James, don't take it personally. :)

Ditto.

I must say I agree with everything thats been said. TVF is however sad a part of my life, if I'm not the net I check there for new posts, and I now, check here. There should def be a replacement to Mrtom, and I do remember voting for Jamez first time around.

(Point 1, serious.) I certainly agree that TVF is not nearly tough enough on the trolls; and on the rare occasions they ARE tough, they're tough too slowly.

(Point 2, possibly less.) They should make two changes at TVF. Firstly make sure they have a valid address for all members. Secondly make me a moderator and buy me an axe. Once the trolls have had their hands cut off at the wrist, they're unlikely to come back.

I know I have posted idiotic threads before now but have to agree with alot of peoples comments on TVF.

I used to visit it regulary at one stage but now I rarely visit it once a week now.

I don't see how Jamez would be a bad mod as long as he didn't edit posts like babyben's mod did.

I think I should run the forum. Then I can ban James Martin. Then I shall be happy.

Seriously though, would it be TVF without the trolls?
