Sainsbury's actually let you do phone scan-and-shop in the big stores as well. Again though, I find it easier to use the device because you can keep it in its holster and just scan the items that way.

You still have to pay at a checkout in bigger stores tho.

Isn't that the store on the site of the old Food Giant? I see it frequently going past it on the train.

It is indeed. It's been in a bit of a sorry state for years though, it clearly never performed very well - probably there being 2 other Tesco Extras nearby hasn't helped. The counters were removed very early on and at the same time some aisles on the floor were permanently closed off (example: https://photos.app.goo.gl/u2GgEwwmA1h9cBeM8 ).

More recently the mezzanine was half closed off so there's just clothing up there now; the false wall they've put across the rest is a totally naff effort as it is very clear to see when entering the shop.

I'm surprised it has kept the 'extra' moniker to be honest; presumably it only has because it'd cost something to remove it.

Its hours have gradually been cut back too from 24 hours down to 6am to 11pm - which in fairness is still generous but is an hour earlier than all the other Tesco supermarkets in the vicinity. It does still have a pharmacy tho.

Aren't they the kind that work in a hands-free mode when they're mounted on the trolley holster? I presume that's the reason for it.
Do they? I'll have to check that...

Was using a self checkout at Sainsbury's earlier and the barcode scanner didn't catch my loaf of bread on my first attempt and as I had already leaned over a bit far (like I was about to put it in the bag), a new message popped up on the screen saying "It looks like that last item didn't scan correctly".

It also showed me a live birds eye view of the checkout and scanning area from a camera mounted above the till, prompting me to try again.

This seems to have been based only on my movements as it popped up before I put the loaf down, which would've triggered the weigh scale "try again" warning.

Or more likely, the barcode scanner knows it found a barcode, but it didn't validate correctly - small folds will do this. No need for complicated motion tracking / computer vision.

Could it have picked up a QR code by mistake? I’ve had that a few times now.

I don't think the till "saw" any barcode/QR code. There was no beep from the scanner at all.

I was in a bit of a rush and quickly flung my bread past the front of the till but was probably too far away. Not hearing a beep, I was about to try again anyway but the screen had already switched to this new camera view from above. It felt like being told "don't even try it, mate". I was so surprised I looked up to see where the camera was.

I've had those 'code not recognised' errors before, when it's caught QR codes on packaging for competitions etc. It still beeps, throws up an error and needs the assistant to come over.

I'm sure all will become clear in due course.

The same store also has the receipt barcode scanner gate to get out of the self-checkout area. "Sorry, it hardly ever works" says the assistant stood there helping people try to leave the store.

Yeah, I had this happen the other day too. It's definitely new and quite a disconcerting feeling. My Sainsbury's also now has a camera that identifies loose produce when you weigh it, so you don't "accidentally" press the wrong button. It's all making supermarket shopping quite a depressing 1984-esque experience.

Not really sure how supermarkets have got away with taking away served checkouts, then reducing the number of staff on self checkouts so you have to wait ages to get help, then making you feel like an enormous inconvenience for having the temerity to need a carrier bag, and now this in-your-face surveillance, but here we are.
