I must apologise for this particularly terrible spelling mistake. I knew something about the post wasn't quite right.

Why would they not trust him, Beep? He hasn't done anything yet.

I picked up a Metro today on the bus. Not read it for a few weeks and there's obviously been a Scottish independence argument running in the letters page.

Thought I might reproduce one of the letters today regarding the money to/from Scotland to the Union.
The London Government's own statistics show that Scotland pays more in to the Treasury than she gets. The 2007 figures show that the money received that year was only 10% of what we contributed.

The rest remained in London to prop up a failing British economy. The Government also commissioned a report into how the countries in the UK would fare if they were independent and it showed that Scotland would be the third wealthiest country in Europe and seventh in the world, while England didn't even make the top 20.
Another poses the question of why London is keen not to see the Union break apart - and speculates that the answer is the wealth of oil remaining in the North Sea - "they said it would last for 30 years, now they are saying it will be a further 30".

Interesting stuff.

Quick straw poll - if Scotland broke out of the Union, would you consider the oil to be the property of Edinburgh or London?

There'd be one heck of an argument similar to the Croatia - Slovenia Piran Bay stalemate. The critical element would be the angle of the last segment of the border north of Berwick-upon-Tweed, having looked this up the North Sea maritime border would lead out from between Lamberton Beach (Scottish side) and Marshall Meadows Point (English side) to the North East at roughly 45degrees; so significant oil resources would appear to be English, based on international rules.

Of course if Scotland did become independent, I'd love to see Scottish Chief of the General Staff the Lord Alex Salmond send his army and navy to protect its interests from the English marauders. Send the destroyers off the coast, protecting the oil rigs from Queen Elizabeth's navy.

That would be called prejudice.
