what software? Not something horrifically overbloated like invision?Asa wrote:Not that that would make a difference to the database going up the spout though, of course. There is a whole new design minus Flash and zippy menus, a whole new piece of forum software and a new host due later this year.

In terms of PHP based forum software 'Infinite Core Technology' http://infinitecore.com is very good. It's free, lots of admin features, and fairly easy to customise, it was created by Ikonboards' second set of coders (the first set went on to do Invision Power Board).
Personally I see no point in paying for forum software such as Invision and VBulliten when there are free alternatives which are just as good. In terms of Perl based forum software Ikonboard is stable, and good.

Nope, it's my own completely custom designed one. That's why there's such a vague date on it being introduced. I've been working on it when I've had spare time since the end of last year and there's still lots to do.Hymagumba wrote:what software? Not something horrifically overbloated like invision?
A separate site will be set up for as many forumers as possible to give it a good seeing to, iron out the problems, tweak the design etc. before it finally replaces the current site.
It hopefully won't be bloated - a lot of the stuff is what you'd expect from every forum but there's always a few things that can be thrown in the mix, both for the benefit of members and mods. Any suggestions, things that bug you about the current site etc. are all welcome.

And why do I get the impression that I'm going to totally regret SEEING that phrase?Asa wrote:it's my own completely custom designed one.

I'd give it a while before judging it - at least have the oppurtunity to see it running first.Nick Harvey wrote:And why do I get the impression that I'm going to totally regret SEEING that phrase?Asa wrote:it's my own completely custom designed one.
There is a big difference between modding an existing site and writing your own. If you have written the code yourself, you know it inside out - only the routines that are needed are written and any additions can be tailored specifically for the site rather than modding somebody else's work.
I've just moved off a third party packaged site to one I have written myself and it is much easy to keep running!

I take your point fully.Ebeneezer Scrooge wrote:I'd give it a while before judging it.
However, the idividual of whom we are talking has a lengthy reputation for poor attention to detail.
That's not a trait I'd put in the person specification for a software writer.
