I've seen a lot of commentary on the causes but I think it's pretty clear where this started

I've always thought this to be quite a weak retort when it comes to this issue - the cost of repainting white lines etc must be less than that of fixing a pothole, although surely neither activity is financially ruinous!

Whilst I disagree with the idea that painting red crosses on things is immediately criminal vandalism, I can understand the need for them to be removed. Very rarely are these budding sign-writers incredible artists, so their work frequently looks pretty awful. As a society, accepting that we just have to live with half-arsed attempts at flags all over the place wouldn't be a good thing.
The cost of filling a pot hole the size of a shoebox, or bigger undoubtedly costs more - but here’s the thing - most of them start as a small piece of damage that never gets fixed or on poorly maintained roads that if they were given a little maintenance and tlc, the repairs needed would not be as extensive. And what about all the other lines on roundabouts, particularly the complicated ones that nobody understands, that all rub off and cause confusion cos nobody knows what lane they are supposed to be in that seem to get repainted once a decade at best?

Doesn’t really add up to me.

Tbf it's not clear that the country needs to be united by flags when it seems to be already united by potholes
