The Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, for example, are designed to be replacements for the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre - built in 1964. The Velodrome replaced an existing cycle circuit, so there must have been demand previously.

There's not much demand in Newport for an Olympic-sized velodrome.... oh wait, we have one. Which has been used by the multi-gold-medal-winning British cycling team. Which has 130 members of its junior club alone.

Oh, and your ignorance is astonishing when it comes to the "demolishing" of the Olympic stadium. It has been built in a segmential manner so that post-Games the top section can be removed and then RECYCLED by providing seats and structures to other stadia. The Stadium was always going to be then re-used either as an athletics venue to replace Crystal Palace, or as a football or cricket ground. As your average Championship/Premiership club team in the East End doesn't need an 80k seater arena, it is logical to reduce it to 20k and sell it to a football club. At the moment, both West Ham and Leyton Orient look like the most viable candidates. Essex County Cricket Club are also interested.

even the normally useful bbc news website has relegated the usual news stories to the bottom of the front page whilst pointless guff about the olympics covers most of the other space.... why not just stick it on the recently redesigned and otherwise excellent bbc sport website? isn't that what it's there for?

but all in all, what a banal load of crud and a criminal waste on money, the greeks can keep the olympic games and shove it up their arse.

I watched through it yesterday and I have to agree. Almost shed a tear at the point in 'development' where they all paused to mark the Great War(s). A lovely little showcase for Great Britain - I wonder how the stuff about the NHS went down in America?

If you don't have interest in the wide range of sports the Olympics provides than obviously you won't like it

But I don't think it's a waste of money, not at all. The only problem is so far is the empty seats, and that is from sponsors and not normal people

Not remotely dull. I'm a sports fan, and as such I find it fascinating. We all have hobbies - yours is repetitive uninspiring photography - and mine is cracking open a can and cheering on some Kazakhstani bloke in a leotard trying to lift twice his body weight and how I wish I had his drive and ability.

It's a genuine once in a lifetime event, taking up 16 measly little days out of your life. Can't you just accept that there are people who are interested in it and let them have their moment, and we can go back to the doom and gloom of recession-hit Britain in a couple of weeks? The athletes have worked all their lives for these moments, the least we can do is reward them with a bit of coverage.

Whilst I agree the Olympics is great for a lot of people (not for me) - that's an incredibly rude, pathetic and pretty low way of trying to present your point. Absolutely no need to get personal over someone's opinion on an internet forum.

I'd either come back with a nice balanced argument or opinion or go back to the playground. Jesus christ, I thought Metropol was made of people with better morals and sense than that.
