Am I the only one who thinks apple have completely lost the plot?
ios is now looking incredibly dated, the iphone 4 looks like a nokia 3310 compared with all the sleak android/winphone devices out there and even the new ipad is meh.
Without doubt the ipad is a great device but I find the limitations of ios maddening.. The browser is distinctly average, the separate boxes for search and url is archaic and clumsy.
I can't imagine the macbook will sell many, you can buy a family car for the cost of one of those.

Can't say I agree about ios - I think it's still the slickest and best around.
I think that their most recent products have left me a little underwhelmed, though. Nothing has made me think 'Wow, I need one of those'.

i suppose the thing about ios is that whilst there isn't anything really wrong with it, it's kind of 'windows xp' in its appearance and function - does the job but things have moved on.
"multitasking" in ios is very strange, when you come from android, it's a big step backwards, as is the twin boxes on the browser.
i think as well in that because apple have their own walled garden some things aren't possible and you're stuck with the apple way of doing things whether you like it or not.
i think it will be interesting to see what becomes of the iphone5. this is the real money spinner for apple and once this device and it's spec is announced i'll be interesting to see what direction they are taking it.... same old same old or something different, revolutionary. time will tell.

I really dislike having search and URL in one box - I find it easier to keep my history and URLs in one box and my search in another box. Much simpler.
I think iOS is still a great mobile OS. Like with Mac, everything just works. Especially now with iCloud.

I wandered into the Regent Street Apple Store today to have a play with a Retina MacBook Pro and, although the display is lovely and has added depth, I still don't quite see what the fuss is about. I didn't get back to my MacBook Pro (13" one from last summer) and think that the display was suddenly rubbish. It's fine! Ditto the SSD and use of Flash storage - it was snappy, but there was still a bit of 'lag' when opening Finder or Safari. Purchasing one isn't on my to-do list anyway as I got a MBP last summer, but I'm not even tempted in the slightest, truth be told. I'm sure it's a great computer, but it hasn't got the 'wow' factor that I thought it might.
Although maybe I'm just too hard to impress...

i can't see what all the fuss is about either. but the new ipad is the same to be honest. the new screen is nice, sure, but it's hardly a big wow.
it's going to be interesting to see what apple's next big innovation is. they are way over due for one.
i hear a few persistent rumours about apple lcd tv with loads of built in gubbins, it will be interesting to see what they come up with and how they are priced. if it's anything like the new macbook you'll need to sell your house to get one.

I don't get how it could be amazing. Surely it'll just end up being an Apple TV STB built in to something halfway between an iMac and a Cinema Display?Dr Lobster* wrote:i hear a few persistent rumours about apple lcd tv with loads of built in gubbins, it will be interesting to see what they come up with and how they are priced. if it's anything like the new macbook you'll need to sell your house to get one.
Google are having their conference now, Google IO, and they've announced Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, and Chrome for iPad.
Chrome for iPad is lovely, actually. Snappy, and the omnibox syncing stuff between phone, PC and iPad works well, too. The only issue is that Safari cannot be changed from default web browser.

Good company Apple. Say what you like, they don't half stick to their principles.Critique wrote:The only issue is that Safari cannot be changed from default web browser.
I'll just leave this here.
Since this thread title is pretty meaningless to most, can it become "the Apple Computer thread" or something?
Apple have given another Keynote tonight, and announced quite a few new things, mainly:
A 13 inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display, but still keeping non-retina models. It's the second highest resolution notebook ever...
An updated Mac Mini, with better chips and whatnot.
A new iMac. Quite a bit thinner, and with new gubbins inside.
The New-new iPad. Yes, they announced the fourth gen tonight. Basically, better chips.
iPad Mini. 7.9 inch display, instead of 9.7 inch. Specs slightly better than iPad 2. Starts at £249.
The New-new iPad was the one announcement that really interested me. There was no big celebration about it - it was just 'oh, by the way, this is the fourth-generation iPad'. The updates are really quite minor - to me, it just seems a way of keeping things up to date and fresh, with all the competition. And whilst I'm sure the lower price-point and smaller size will attract many people to iPad Mini, the fact that they knocked half of the bezels on the side off makes it look odd and unbalanced, to me.
Interested to hear what your thoughts are on what Cupertino have came out with.

I think the minor iPad update was to make sure the line up was now fully using the Lightning connector, it would be a bit odd for it to be the only one left using the old connector. I'm sure there will be a more substantial update in the new year.
I love the design of the iPad mini actually, even if it is just a big ol' iPod touch. The price is a bit dearer than I thought it would be, but still a good entry point.
I think the "wow" moment of this keynote has to go to the new iMac. The thickness (or lack of it) is quite astonishing. Good to see they are still selling a separate SuperDrive.
2012 has been a good year for Apple, IMO.
