I would recommend the Beauchamp Hotel on Bedford Place, just off the Russell Square. Stunning rooms, decent beds, helpful staff and they even clean the rooms.
Image standard room. Digital TV and they have DECENT TEA! WiFi and phones ect. but the wifi charges are very steep, I wouldn't recommend that.

I can't reccomend, but I tried cheap in London once (County Hotel nr Euston), never again. I can't beleive I paid £50 for it. I only stayed there because other people were, but it didn't even have a shower on my floor (never mind my room). Woodchip on the wall too!
