The river Piddle in Dorset gave rise to various town/village names with the word "Piddle" in them... which were rapidly changed to Puddle (i.e. Tolpuddle) sometime in history when a royal visit was due to take place.

Just outside Truro there is a village called "Playing Place" - not a place for tomfoolery, but a place where plays were performed.

On the road to Cornwall, there is a "Upper Taphouse", "Middle Taphouse" and "Lower Taphouse" all in a row.

Right near here is a Mavis Enderby, a place I am not surprised to learn is in the Meaning of Liff!

MAVIS ENDERBY (n.)
The almost-completely-forgotten girlfriend from your distant past for
whom your wife has a completely irrational jealousy and hatred.

Pedant of Wiltshire here!

They're actually East Taphouse, Middle Taphouse and West Taphouse and are in Cornwall, being between Dobwalls (an interesting name in iteslf) and Lostwithiel.

I know them well; they're on the road down to Fowey (pronounced Foy).

*salutes* Quite correct sir; I apologise to all residents of the Taphouses for my faulty memory.

I think the area around Chilbolton in Hampshire have some of the most baffling names ever, namely because they're all so similar.

isn't Wetwang always on the map because swoonorama is the honorary mayor?

Out of interest, is Levy the mayor of anywhere? Answers on a postcard.
