Bizzare Place names
The river Piddle in Dorset gave rise to various town/village names with the word "Piddle" in them... which were rapidly changed to Puddle (i.e. Tolpuddle) sometime in history when a royal visit was due to take place.
Just outside Truro there is a village called "Playing Place" - not a place for tomfoolery, but a place where plays were performed.
On the road to Cornwall, there is a "Upper Taphouse", "Middle Taphouse" and "Lower Taphouse" all in a row.

Right near here is a Mavis Enderby, a place I am not surprised to learn is in the Meaning of Liff!
MAVIS ENDERBY (n.)
The almost-completely-forgotten girlfriend from your distant past for
whom your wife has a completely irrational jealousy and hatred.

They're actually East Taphouse, Middle Taphouse and West Taphouse and are in Cornwall, being between Dobwalls (an interesting name in iteslf) and Lostwithiel.
I know them well; they're on the road down to Fowey (pronounced Foy).
*salutes* Quite correct sir; I apologise to all residents of the Taphouses for my faulty memory.Nick Harvey wrote:Pedant of Wiltshire here!Alexia wrote:On the road to Cornwall, there is a "Upper Taphouse", "Middle Taphouse" and "Lower Taphouse" all in a row.
