I spent a weekend in Birmingham about a year and a half or so back - I stayed in the NiteNite hotel mentioned above and completely agree with the comments about it, it was fantastic.

Best place we found to visit was the Mailbox, there are some really nice restaurants, especially the one on the upper bit - think it was a Mexican place?

Birmingham is a fantastic place and there's a lot more to it than many people think. People tend to often walk out of New Street station look around the shops and in the Bullring, maybe as far as the Mailbox if they're daring enough and they say "oh well that's Birmingham done". WRONG.

It is a very vibrant city and I enjoy the nightlife there as well - I've never felt unsafe and it has a good gay scene. Not that I'd know much about that though.

My favourite bit - going to Selly Oak for a curry!

I'm surprised at the generally positive aurae exuding from this thread over the offerings, er, offered by Birmingham. I have to go up there on Thursday afternoon, attend some sort of evening work thing, have an overnight stay, a morning of boredom and then should be set free again in the afternoon, so I think I'll have a wander round the centre and see what I can find. Instead of jumping straight on the train back I thought I'd make the most of having to be there and get some sightseeing in. I think I'll write down some of the places mentioned and have a gander. I'll be like a lone explorer, a maverick who doesn't play by the rules.

YAY, i would certainly find a window in my schedule to show you around this fine city. i could show you where rusty lee had a restaurant, where noel gordon waved from the roof of a hotel to adoring fans and where hp sauce used to be made.

as a volunteer brummy, mr ison, you are required to meet me here at some stage!

i think birmingham's charm has a lot to do with the fact it is so derided by outsiders. its a city that doesn't seek approval from outside, and is therefore self confident.

i think i can speak with some authority on the fact you have never visited the gale.

I have to spend a day there next week which also means an overnight stay. Is Birmingham the kind of place I should get the first train out? Or is it worth sticking around for a couple of hours to have a walk round while I'm there? I am fairly centrally based, on Broad Street actually, so does anybody have any supertips for the place we love to call, well, Birmingham?
