I still struggle to give The Gadget Show any bit of respect.

Well after doing a couple of days of research, I'm still tempted by the iPhone for the all round experience but there appears to be some "interesting" omissions.

Why no tasks feature? I need to make monthly payments that require me to ring up someone and do it manually so the reminders on my Windows Mobile phone are vital but it seems this basic feature is something the iPhone cannot do. I know I could put it on via the calendar but that's not the point. And at the calendar on the device seems fairly basic as well which is a shame. The reminders don't seem up to much - perhaps an iPhone user can advise on this?

No MMS support. This shouldn't bother me as I'm not an MMS fan and I can't remember the last time I used the service. But it bothers that me that such an advanced phone than can "do all" again lacks a basic feature that a phone 5 years its senior can do very easily.

Bluetooth. Can only be used for wireless headsets on phone calls - no sending or receiving files from anyone else. That seems a real disappointment because this is something I do like to take advantage of where possible. Especially with bluetooth cameras now hitting the market - it's great to be able to get a snap from your friend when it's taken and have it as part of your own photo collection.

Cut and paste. This one doesn't really bother me, but it's something that thousands of people seem to have been clamouring for over the last year and a few months, and Apple have been less than forthcoming in addressing the issue claiming the problem is how to implement such a feature.

OK, so I've not pointed out anything that someone else on a blog or forum elsewhere hasn't already pointed out, but it just disappoints me that such an expensive device is lacking in some basic features that could easily be sorted by Apple. After all, if I'm buying into the whole experience, I'd want Apple to give me something worth buying into. Windows Mobile is pretty cack from the outset but you've got hundreds of talented people out there that can help you make it better. Whereas with the iPhone, it's ultimately down to Apple as to how good the device is.

Despite these short comings, and after properly playing with one yesterday, I can't deny that it's a fantastic phone with so many things going for it. But when I can get a Windows Mobile device for the same price on the same contract, knowing that it can do what the iPhone does and more, is there a contest?

Yes I'm sure I'm reading FAR too much into this and it's only a phone, but I feel like I'm embarking on a journey right and I want you to hold my hand as you join me on this journey.

Need to stop off and get a job first though!

Did you try loading metropol on it? Surely THAT is the single most important feature. I've found it tends to get all clogged up like a tube with half-melted wax jammed in it.

I had no idea Copy/Paste wasn't supported. That's a very serious limitation, I use it a LOT in WM. Hmm. Bad news.

Sput: I won't hear a word against iPhone's Safari. It's a phenomenal browser for a portable device. There really is no competition, on any of speed, rendering accuracy or UI. And on top of that, remember - De Facto standard. Web developers will test their sites on an iPhone.

CDD: I'd say that it being unable to render metropol without crashing is a decent enough criticism. Maybe that's fixed now, I'd love to think it is: imagine all of the secret forum sitting on trains and in far-flung places conducting their systematic evil!

Unfortunately this is one thing I forgot to do! Metropol loads lovely on Opera for Windows Mobile though, so that could be another winner. After all I may need to tell you about the temperature of the bus I'm travelling on.

Ison: Do you use the Opera v9 beta? If so, do you ever experience difficulties in clicking on links, with the links not activating when tapped etc? I'd be interested to know if I'm alone in this problem.
