I don't really feel a burning desire for the iPhone (iPod touch does me fine) but nice that Alexia also shares the view of when I became a bit distant from Apple, the iPod in a sense was the end of the old Apple as the smart person's choice to using Windows (shut up cdd) and the start of the new Apple as the dumb person's choice too stupid to use Windows properly, still a darn sight better than Windows but not as much as it was during the OS 9~Tiger days.

Still stand by them but feel they've lost their way a tad bit.

I actually went right from the "Oh my god, mac = moron" side to the other after I experimented by buying a cheap little powerbook G4 off ebay a couple of years ago. The lure of having free developer tools, Bash and Microsoft Office all on the same computer helped, but overall I do love my mac because it gives me less jip than windows does - a good example of which is the implementation of wireless networking, oh and the power management is just lovely too. No waiting around for standby to kick in and no random waking up. I find life is just easier. I don't see myself ditching my pc desktop because there are gaps that the mac has and I do like to tinker, but it's easily become my "proper" computer.

Having said that I do get them all off ebay because I could never justify the retail cost! As for what nini said about "today", I see her point. I get the impression things have been a bit rushed out in the last year or so. I don't use MobileMe but I get the impression that if I did I'd be deeply unhappy.

I wouldn't have pressed my point but for the fact that you added that sentence in as an edit - and that's that whole shit I hate about supercilious mac users.

"Better" is subjective at best. Don't waste my time with the hoary old "virus" argument, because if you're set up properly even if you get one on your pc (as I have, a couple of times in a decade or more) its little more than an inconvenience.

Add universality, cheap machines and components, a galaxy of software, and pcs are *hardly* a poor relation to your aluminium bragging symbols.

I love pcs. Fuck off, get over yourself and quit stating your opinions as facts mac people.

I hate Macs. I have always hated Macs. I hate people who use Macs. I even hate people who don't use Macs but sometimes wish they did. Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers for people who earnestly believe in feng shui. - Charlie Brooker.

Wise Words....

Tsk, I thought I'd been fairly substantial myself.

aeonsource: that comment was SO written to get traffic. Plenty of high-level developers use macs. Hell, one of the guys that built the gigantic computing grid at CERN uses one, come to think of it so do a bunch of phd students there too! Actually macs are pretty big in science, which is interesting. That's not to say all scientists have a clue about computers though.

They're also popular with extreme sports fans and actors. But that in and of itself tells you nothing.

I aint mad at you for liking macs - but I get positively furious at the self-congratulation and condescension exhibited by mac users who somehow, inexplicably, believe that their computer experience is "better" and more rich and fulfilling than mine - without even asking what my experience is.

It's just the height of arrogance.

I loved the fact that at my uni, there were over 200 PCs spread over the two campuses for general use (this was an art college with a media faculty) and only 20 Macs, tucked away into their own partitioned off suite.

I'm not so much replying to you there with the second bit gav, just the outrageous falsehood that aeonsource is trying to perpetuate. All the same, I try not to say things are better without good reasons and I hope I'm not coming off that way, I just like to stand by my decision. I never try and force macs on people when they [frequently] ask for suggestions. Perhaps in the end it's just that more mac users *like* their computers than PC users, and with a market so diverse in quality as PCs that's not surprising.

As far as the prettiness factor goes: I think we've gotten to a point now that industrial design is a feature that people are starting to consider more. Happily some PC companies have realised that - HP make lovely looking things that are a little more expensive (not as much as a mac) than ugly-as-sin dells.

I agree with Gav, yes but yknow how it works both ways, both extreme sides of either platforms are not good representations of either and even though I'm fairly entrenched in the Mac side of things I'll say that there's a lot of things Windows does do better.

Guess I also hate Windows zealots... yes you again cdd and I guess aeonsouce for posting two opinions which are as old and hoary as the "Macs are virus free" one and passing them off as original thought. Even though I'm still uncertain if Mark ever did fix his issue before we had a Mac vs. Windows (again) debate, I think we can all agree that even after all of it is done, they both still beat out Linux (yep, just made it a threeway).

I agree with you Gav. I've only owned PCs (4 so far, not counting work, over 10 years) and I've normally only changed them because something better was available, cannibalising the previous for other best-bits.

I've never had a Mac, but I do find that anyone I've talked to who has owned one, including those on here, seem to take a superior attitude about them despite the obvious overwhelming popularity of PCs. Of course, it can be argued that Microsoft's aggressive marketing et al has created that; but as with the VHS vs Betamax quandry of the 80/90s, popularity surpasses any perceived quality for most day-to-day punters.

There is nothing to stop Mac users being proud of their equipment, for sure, but there is a need for them to stop being so arrogant about it. I suspect they won't be the last ones sniggering, somehow!
