Did anyone knows what it is about this new 21:9 resolution? Is it just a new way to earn more money?

Oh yes I saw that (was it on Click?) recently.

Its being pitched for "movie aficionados", so they can watch as close to 2.25:1 movie aspect ratio as possible.

Can't remember how they said it delivers it. Presumably studios aren't going to remaster anamorphic versions to fit that format, so there would doubtless be cropping of the letterbox bars going on.

Which adds up to less resolution and softer pictures.

Pointless, really, as we'll have OLED wallpaper in the next decade, meaning you can watch unfathomably large wall size pictures.

That's my hope anyway...

I've had a look at the resolutions for Freeview and was surprised by the results:

BBC1-2-News, Five, E4+1, Film4, Virgin1+1, ITV2+1, Sky Three-News-Sports News, Dave

704x576
Channel 4, ITV1

544x576
BBC Parliament, E4, More4, 4Music, Channel 4+1, FiveUS, Fiver, ITV2-3-4, Virgin 1, Dave Ja Vu

Seeing so many +1 channels with supposedly better resolutions than their regular channel.
