Knowing how to code by hand is good but the days of the fully-hand-coded-in-a-text-editor website which looks like it was from the mid to latter part of the last decade are dead unless you have a masochistic streak.
Nini, do I seriously look like the sort of person who'd make-do with something that looks like it could have been from the mid to the latter part of the last decade? Is it not dazzlingly obvious to you by now that I am an individual of exacting professional standards?

Well, four different designs of the same website. And I did start off in Frontpage for the first one but soon realised it was better just to do everything from scratch in Notepad. It's really not that difficult once you get out of the habit of virtually having everything done for you.

Since you were 3?

I must admit I've been using Dreamweaver for years and adore it. I code by hand in the thing obviously but it fills in most of the code as I type to save time. I probably am using a massive app for something an advanced text editor could do to be honest but its not the point.

Me too - the tag-completing thing is so useful that I've actually become semi-dependent on it. The way it manages sites and FTP though is a pain, and I haven't had much luck finding a freeware replacement that I really like.

in what way? I find the ability to save and have it uploaded quite nice.
As for plain FTP, I've always used Terrapin, an ancient windows 95 thing that, even though its ugly and has trouble with CHMODing, keeps site maps and allows me to drag a folder and only update the newer files within it. I've never found another FTP program that does it as nicely as that.

I also use Terrapin because it was the FTP program originally recommended by Freeserve when I first moved from Viewdata onto the Web. The truth of why I'm still using it is, probably, because I just can't be bothered to change.
As to coding, yes I use FrontPage for the simplicity of creating pages, but I'm not aversed to clicking the 'HTML' tab when I need to and doing a bit in, what's effectively, a 'Notepad' editor as well. There are points where FrontPage wrongly assumes what you want to do, so a quick correction of the HTML can sort things out.
My days of choosing to code in the most basic of languages ended in 1965 when I moved from Machine Code to FAS (assembler) on an ICT 1500 (RCA 301). I now have better things to do with my time than to write six lines of code when one would have done.
I suspect most of you will find you have a similar attitude as your years advance and you join the National Trust. Walking around Sissinghurst last Saturday was definitely preferable to coding a website.

Hoho.

*looks at avatar, notes Sput's comment* Yes entirely to the former, absolutely not to the latter.

Not completely, not for liking The Lion King of course but very close by for differing reasons so you're wrong, cdd.

What might those 'differing reasons' be then?

Good articulate response there.
