From what I recall, a 1:20 year flood prevention is entirely inadequate for a civil engineering job.

Even a layman knows that the weather has more extremes now than ever. I'm surprised it was rubber-stamped in the first place.

I don't think they were admitting it would flood every 20 years as they thought the pumps would have been sufficient to deal with that level of rainfall.

But you're right, we have more extreme weather now than we used to have and that really needs to be taken into account. Look at the size of the storm drains they build in other countries...

It was a bit of a stupid idea building it there next to 2 rivers. Especially with recent rainfall figures. Was hoping you'd post something about the floods. Doesn't seem to be getting much coverage. Is it affecting you much. The Folkestone non news worthy earhquake sky and beeb news seemed to bang on forever about a few cracks on chimney pots, whereas the floods in NI gets next to zilch.

Thankfully I live on a hill by the sea, so I worry more about wind than floods. But a friends dad's place in Banbridge flooded on Saturday night, I'm not sure how much damage has been caused. The rain has been terrible again in the last couple of hours and with water levels already very high and the ground saturated I'm sure there'll be further flooding happening.

My parents were travelling from Enniskillen to their home outside Lurgan on Saturday afternoon, and experienced no delays in their journey until they reached the road a quarter of a mile from the house - and spent over an hour attempting other routes to their house before they finally made it back.

Speaking to my parents over the weekend, my Mum said she'd never seen anything like the weekend flooding before, while I don't think NI has experienced floods of that magnitude for around 20 years.

While here in York, the water levels on the Ouse had risen yesterday, a flood alert remains in place further down the river and we had more heavy rain last night...

The rather more than average rainfall was my holiday welcome to Northern Ireland, it was a bad omen when we couldn't acually see anything through the front windows of the ferry as we approached Belfast. We then got caught up in a massive traffic jam as large parts of the embankment on the M2 had decided to wash down into the carriageway (which was reduced to the hard shoulder and one lane) the other roads were very very wet and we were glad to find our rented house was high up overlooking a swollen river. I hadn't seen flash flooding that bad first-hand before, made Mid-Wales seem dry!

Typically we left Belfast this weekend in glorious sunshine - hopefully my next visit will be less wet! Wonderful part of the world tho.
