I dunno --- with me it taps into the whole nostalgia thing - I grew up watching Short Circuit on occasional Saturday nights and it's a part of my childhood... it's a more innocent film (albeit about Cold War nuclear robotics and touches on "what is life?" issues), but on the surface for the kids it's a straightforward good-guy funny robot v bad-guy soldiers story. For the modern generation of film-makers to fail so spectacularly to come up with something original (the art director implicitly admits he was influenced by Johnny 5) and for a character to overtly bear such an aesthetically strong resemblance to J5, I cannot help but feel animosity towards WALL-E, however good a film it may turn out to be.
NIDave - with a little imagination, possibly loads - but look specifically in this case at the angle of the treads, the shape of the head and hands, and the personality and vocal similarities (In early parts of the film, before Johnny 5 learnt to speak, he made emotional, cute noises...remind you of anyone?) There's even a scene where WALL-E squashes a grasshopper for goodness sake!
Kung Fu Panda
You make out as if people should not be able to make creative decisions based on things that inspired them which'd make me a fraud, do you want that huh? Do you?
The film is good, very good in fact and hits you over the head with about as much subtlety as Short Circuit does when it comes to the plot and is as innocent as SC ever could be if not slightly more so. Aesthetics aside (and it's true just how much they look alike but like Dave asks, give me a utilitarian robit which doesn't look that way), the film is pretty much a dead simple love story at it's heart and if you can try and disconnect Johhny 5 from Wall-E, you'll like it. FYI, I also noted it but was able to do a disconnect between these two robots when I watched it as they're just not the same even if they look it.

U wibder uf sineie* ... whoops ... I wonder if someone brought out a film about a small pudgy alien who befriends a small boy in small-town America and a bunch of NASA scientists come and take him away....
*It looked like I'd subliminally typed German but it seems my right hand was one key to the left of where I meant it to be....cool!
That is very bizzare, even wossat-then (or woßat-then) followed German grammar. I'd be a fraud because all that I've made which was inspired by something else (which is a lot) would make me a fraud as all I've done is copy ideas, is that right?Alexia wrote:Fraud? Wossat-then?

That little strawman you built though, that'd be a full-on concept thievery and isn't the same as a robot vaguely looking like another robot.
I have seen this film, one of my mates got a copy, I beleive so his mother could watch it, it was that or:
* killer tomatoes eat Paris
* B movie about us goverment and bio war trail
its alright movie, I dare say many kids will like it for the kung fu and the action,but that is the market who its design for, it does not matter that us the adults dis-like it
I have to agree with earlier comments jack black is just like a bus and take any role that put in front of him, I don;t believe his a bad actor but could pick some of this role better

The scientists are still working on it - apparently a more challenging project than the Large Hadron Collider, the decoding of the human genome, fixing bugs in Windows Vista... combined!Nini wrote:Anyone got a Barcy-English dictionary handy? I swapped mine out for a Tumbly Wumbly-English codebook.
