in answer to the original question, i think the great british pub probably is doomed in the long term. i think all that will be left in the end are grotty wetherspoons in town centres. our village has a pub, but it's a brewers fayre. it's ok for a quick bite, but it has no character at all.

The pubs in my area seem to be doing ok. A fair few of them are undergoing refurbishment. My local village pub seems to always be busy. It's a typical country pub. Got loads of character a huge beer garden, skittle alley and a brook with lovely big weeping willows. I've not heard of any closing yet, several have turned themselves into restaurants and another is turning itself into a traditional pub restaurant and posh B&B. A bit like a traditional old Inn.
You would think that with the ease we have of popping over to the continent to pick up cheap booze we'd be a county of home drinkers but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I don't agree Lorna. It might be easy for those of us close to south coast ferryports to pop over to the continent for cheap booze - but the fact remains that it's cheaper to go and buy it from the supermarket rather than spend a night in the pub.

Most of what used to be by regular 'nights out' are now either spent here with friends or round at their homes. It's a lot cheaper to buy a couple of bottles of wine from the supermarket and get a takeaway in than spend to a night in the pub. Even when we do go out to the pub or a club, it's alot later than it used to be and we only get a couple of drinks.

Yes which is why I think I'm going to lock it, I was wondering whether its a bit draconian but I think allowing it to continue taking into account it was started by someone on a permanent ban is a bit iffy.

If anyone else wishes to discuss this event of global importance, start a new thread.

I replied directly to nini's post and for some reason the additional posts weren't flagged up, perhaps ticking the lock box overrides it. Probably should unlock in in that case.
