I messed around once, I pluged my iPod into a double-Jack ended audio cable which went into my microphone jack on the PC, changed the sound settings so that the microphone plays out on the speakers, and hey-presto. It worked.

But Vista screwed it up.

Now, I may have read that wrong, but isn't that the reverse of what I said? Not that it matters of course. Or am I being thick (probably for the second time this evening)?
