Partially singe the carpet - then the smell of burnt carpet will outstink the smell of stale vom.

Don't singe too much though, as it may result in a burnt down house.

Try making a wet paste from biological washing powder. Spread liberally on the vom affected area. Leave for a good while to soak in, but don't let it dry out, then sponge off.

I think I've been watching too much Kim & Aggie.

Cold soapy water is the answer. Never use hot water for vomit. My brother taught me that, he worked on the ferries and became quite a dab hand at cleaning up other peoples sick. It's something to do with the smell being carried around the air in the steam from the hotwater.
