Apple iPhone
Never buy a product when it is first released. There are bound to be several bugs, software issues and battery problems that need time to be ironed out. Also, much is missing, like 3G technology and, as has been said, a better camera. Wait until the 2nd or 3rd generation iPhone.

3g technology is a turd though, i don't think i'd ever use it... i mean, why? why would anybody want to make a crappy video call (which is grainy, seriously lacking in definition and jumpy), or download crappy video clips for £1 each? i'd rather watch them at home on my nice big telly or monitor.
the majority of communications especially with younger kids, who i would expect to be most interested in this technology, just isn't... - is done via sms and msn messenger (my cousin a case in point, who is constantly on msn with about 30 windows open). i think video calling is nothing more than a novelty that nobody really wants. my friend (who got a brand new sony ericsson phone with a *real* flash, don't know the model) hasn't even got the 3g functionality activated (i wanted to test it to see how it looked with the camera) because all he wants is a phone with a decent camera.

If you ask me, I reckon (and to be honest hope) O2 gets it, their a big company now with all of the XDA things, although there's a chance Vodafone'll get it a bit more, I've just moved contracts from Vodafone (and previously T-Mobile as they were just awful)

The US carrier for the iPhone is Cingular/ATT AND NOT Verizon (Verizon are partially owned by Vodafone.)
This 'snub' by Apple in the US leads me to believe that Vodafone will not be over keen for trans-atlantic political reasons to link up in Europe.
It really depends whether Telefonica are keen on establishing an Apple relationship. Telefonica being o2's parent. Orange/FT would be potential link up partners too.
Apple MIGHT think again about Marketing with only one Mobile carrier though in Europe as it might cause EU competition concerns.

I've been on the phone to Apple today. Among other services here's what I got
You don't have to have a 16:9 telly for Apple TV, 4:3 is fine.
The Apple iPhone is bundled with a yearly contract with whoever does it, but I think that's optianal - you can use any sim
