Am I being ripped off?
there is no way a spark plug could cause that much damage. I never knew of one exploding before, but if it did and someithing fell off then it might get stuck between piston and barrel and cause some major damage that would require and engine strip, but no way £2,500. You can get a replacement engine with warranty for alot less.

Not sure how far you've got on this, i will read through the thread in a mo. I'm pretty sure you don't need a new engine. When Mr. Hellfire gets home i'll get his verdict for you. I reckon one of your spark plugs has burnt out and needs replacing. In which case you will be better off replacing all spark plugs and buying new HT leads and disributor. That will cost you very little depending where you go. But like i say Mr. Hellfire is the master mechanic. I know i've spent many an hour under the bonnet of Jaguars with him over the years. There's not a car to date he's not been able to fix.nidave wrote:I have no ideas about cars, but my Corsa broke down last wednesday, took to to an approved Vauxhall Garage (beside my work) and they said the spark plug had exploded and they needed to strip the engine to see what damage if any it caused. They phoned me up today saying the whole engine needs replacing... I wouldn't have thought a spark plug would have caused that much damage... whats more they are going to charge me £2500 for it!!!!!
He may bombard you with alot of questions, from the basic i.e battery and petrol gauge to the more complicated. Be warned get all the symptoms to hand.

When a spark plug ignites mixture it explodes upwards and outwards not inwards, that's the physics. The sparkplug may have cracked in which case at worst, the chamber of saig spark plug may need rethreading.
No,no,no,no,no do you need a new engine!
Can't wait for Mr. Hellfire to come home and diagnose the problem.

Quick update - got the car out of the garage sharpish, went to a local garage recommended by someone at work, they can fix it.
The spark plug centre was gone just the ceramic bit left and the piston had a very rough edge where it had been melted (saw this myself - its amazing the force that's there)
They can replace the piston and flatten something or other as it becomes warped during use and will cost max £600.
