I want at least 1Mbit, and a monthly fee of no more than £20-25!
PlusNet...
2meg Broadband Premier, no Cap, £21.99/month.
2meg Broadband Plus, no Cap but Traffic Shaped for P2P, £14.99/month.
2meg Broadband PayG, 1GB usage, you can buy more, £14.99/month.

WARNING: DO NOT SELECT 8MEG BROADBAND PREMIER (it's not available, but they will still charge you to queue).

Customer Service is the best you can get, the pricing isn't bad either. I'm on Broadband Plus - I don't really use P2P/Bittorrent much.

If I placed an order tomorrow, how long before my modem arrives and I'm up and running?

I've just had a brand new BT line installed, and my dial-up speed is currently 48.5kbps! This same computer hooked up to my mums antiquated telephone line only gets 26.0kbps!

I'm living around a mile from my exchange which is called Cardiff Empire, and living a stones throw from some big companies and the Assembly buildings, the exchange should be able to deliver me top notch broadband. I hope!
Takes between 1-2 weeks for activation to any ADSL (that's all in BT's hands), your modem should be there before the activation. And make sure there's no interference, I'm only a mile from the exchange yet an old BT Ringer is causing noise, can't be filtered out. It's going to be removed soon so I should get a clean service. You should get 2meg (and in the future 4/8 meg).

I get 1mbit as I'm quite a distance form the exchange. It was upped by pipex rom my 512 service for free as part of the exchange upgrade program thingy.

Would love to have 2mbit or something higher though.

I was on 2MBit with NTL up until June, and my download speed on Limewire was averaging out at around 250kb per second.

So a 5 megabyte audio track took less than 20 seconds to download. Fab times. ;)

If you do go for PlusNet and expect that sort of speed on P2P go for Broadband Premier. Broadband Plus is only about 1/10th of that speed for P2P/Bittorrent.

Looks like Telewest are following NTL's lead . . .
Telewest is following the lead of NTL by increasing broadband access speeds to 10 meg.

From next month, the cable company is to begin work upgrading its network on
a region-by-region basis. The work is expected to be completed early next year.

Once completed, punters currently hooked up to Telewest's entry-level 512K
service will see their speed increased to 2 meg. Those currently hooked
up to 1 meg will see their speed accelerate to to 4 meg
while the rest will get the full 10 meg.
More here . . . Telewest announces 10 meg broadband . . . at TheRegister.co.uk

Modems are ridiculously fickle and it doesn't take much to upset a modem to knock it down to a slower yet stable connection. But you may actually find that it will still download and surf at the same speed as it would normally.

Good for you, we had enough trouble getting 512k on ANY provider up until earlier this year, so I think anything faster for us is a very long way off.

I've just thought - if I upgrade my 1Mb line to a 2Mb now (for not a huge price differential), I'll get upgraded to the full 10Mb.

I think I'll do it tomorrow. Someone remind me if I forget.

Thanks for that!

I seemed to have caused quite a stir at work about this, so there are several of us planning to do just that today!

Demon are offering completely unlimited non-shaped 2meg for 19.99 a month (12 month contract) with free setup and free modem. You can even save the 6 quid postage that plusnet would charge you for sending the free modem!

You could always risk bulldog, but at the moment they have a 20,000 order backlog and a list of billing and activation problems as long as a supermarket logo thread.
