however we are in britain where most punters call it "lidl". it doesnt make sense to spend an awful lot of money telling us about their cheap tomatoes on the radio, when the listeners have no idea which supermarket they are talking about.

I do recall my ex-girlfriends grandad saying he'd bought something that morning at a place called "Awl-dye."
I foolishly replied saying there was a place here called Aldi that sells the same thing. Took me a minute to realise he was talking about the same place. Doh!

In Mecccico, HSBC bought out some bank company and overnight changed the name. It didn't go to plan! Because of spanish pronunciation (anyone aware of it will realise this) it was almost impossible to say "HSBC" (comes out something like: At-che-a-se-be-e-ce-e". Hence, a huge advertising campaign followed to "teach" the proper English pronunciation. Lidl's problems are only lidl in comparison to HSBC's failed relaunch!
James H: You have been awarded the Fabbest Post award on Metropol. Well done!

That often seems to be the problem when using the brands internationally. I'm sure there are still people who call Seat cars 'seet'.
Toyota also had trouble when launching the MR2 in France, as they pronounce it 'emm-air-der', which said quickly sounds like Merde.
