that's a very good question - does anybody know the reason for this?

wasn't it because he didn't like people referring to him as "luxton"? (he renamed his account to tvarksouthwest as well)

He complained about the comments made about him asking for everything to be removed. I compromised by puting his name on the filter so that it wasn't thrown up in search engines at least.

All that has passed now so it can be removed.

The pisstake of Luxton I feel is accepted because he is, to be fair, asking for it with this backward attitudes to things and the way he goes off on one when anyone tries to talk sense into him.

The fact that is geuninely is like he is is quite frankly bizarre.
I thought Simon himself had requested that 'Luxton' be added to the swear filter because certain members began using it as an adjective, eg. when discussing why there was controversy over Corrie's first gay kiss, someone commented "but it's *GAY*...which is *EVIL* / *SINFUL* / *UNNATURAL* / *ADVERTISING REVENUE* / *LUXTON* (delete as applicable)". I've now read Martin's explanation above.

Personally, I wouldn't be too chuffed if my name was used in this context either.

James, with all due respect, just because you can take a bit of leg-pulling in your stride doesn't mean everyone can, and IMO some of the personal comments made about Simon on these boards have gone well beyond the 'invisible line' referred to in this thread. He may well be an easy target beacuse of the way he reacts to these, but - as mentioned above - if someone is clearly offended by personal comments then the responsible and decent thing to do is to stop posting them.

Good points Si... but the point I'm making is that Luxton is percieved on here as your typical "village idiot" type guy. His out-and-out backward attitude almost really calls for concern, he refuses to accept that people, society and culture have moved on from the 70s and 80s.

I actually think to an extent he puts it on for effect!

Anyway... I remember that he got arsey when Jamez did the Simon Luxton Interview and I was like... oh come on!

And anyway, you can't beat a bit of bully.

I do agree using a name in that context is out of order though.

But the issue is where the boundary lies between stick for being the backward guy and simple abuse. In many cases, this line has been crossed by quite a distance, and I personally can't blame anyone for taking offence if they are treated in the way that certain people have.

For instance Mr Martin, I've been pretty harsh on you with your cracking demos and general oddness. But that's fair game as I'm sure you'll agree. I would never go to the level of calling you an ugly fat bastard.

Because you're too thin.

Joke.

But seriously - there is a line that most people with brains can see. Some people cannot, and it seems to go unnoticed an awful lot under the guise of "harmless fun" when it probably isn't. And there's a danger of the people who do have brains joining in.

In some ways I suppose he has left himself open to the abuse/banter/bullying (call it what you will) is the way in which he had revealed his complete identity on the forums and posted that infamous testcard article about him from some TV magazine, complete with mugshot. People have to realise that once you release something on the internet, there really is no turning back - as soon as it left your server once then it could be sent onto many people.

Whilst I see the point that he has a "out-and-out backward attitude" in some respects, he is entitled to it, if that is what he is comfortable with and believes in. Nobody should be forced to change their opinion on something just to "fit in" with the majority IMO. People will always disagree in real-life and online, and that's the best thing about it - people have differing opinions on various topics, and it would be very boring if people agreed all the time and liked the same thing.

If he had, say, chosen a username that wasn't his first and last name, and kept himself to himself, then I don't think he would have had the "problems" he would have had now - with Jamez making the mocks taking the piss about him and his liking for Grange Hill.

I do feel that the line has been crossed at some points when it comes to Simon, Martin and others. Personally, I would feel quite offended at some of the comments made about these people, but in some way, they have left themselves open to it in the respect that they've exposed their full identity and photos of themselves onto t'internet for all to see.

As for the point about Simon Luxton being added to the swear filter, I suppose it was some sort of damage limitation exercise - after all, if, for example someone was consulting professor Google, entered in your name and found a load of people a forum ripping the piss out of you, would you be happy?

I haven't felt the "metropol 247" abuse myself on here but have been told to shut up a few times, which 99% of the time people are correct :D

Luxton didn't like being refered to as "Luxton" so several of us did turn it into a swearword for a while. He then interpreted the above as calling him gay which - at least in the schoolyard definition of "gay" - he was, so that became another part of the characature of Luxton. How similar Simon is to "Luxton" is another matter but I still think the biggest wierdo round here is James Martin
