In America at the moment and to be honest I could easily get used to the different keyboard layout if it meant saving a few bob.

Does anyone know any good US stores which sell Apple computers at a nice price?

Ah, but what about customs? Don't you have to pay tax on goods over a certain amount?

A tip is, apparently, is to send the empty box and all other contents such as manuals, plugs, documents and receipts to yourself in the post but buy a laptop bag (you know the type), shove your iBook in that and walk through customs just like you would as if you were a businessman!

There is indeed a fairly nasty amount of tax levied on goods from outside the EU, and goods over £200 from inside the EU. Now I can't remember the figures but I think it could well cover the difference between the price over there and it over here.

EDIT : It appears you'd have to pay standard VAT at 17.5%, though no import tax...see this pdf...

Bah, customs can fuck off. The amount of times I've brought cigarettes and alcohol back and forgotten to go into the "Anything to declare" area is numerous.

Having said that, I just got a vision of the above comments being read out at my prosecution.

Prosecution lawyer: "Members of the jury, Might I turn you attention to a recent
discussion topic, on the Metropol 24/7 internet forum, regarding exhibit D353,
were the accused said, and I quote, 'Bah, customs can fuck off . . . !' "

Judge: (looking blankly at computer monitor) "What do I click on?"

Prosecution Lawyer: "Just double click that little blue E on the screen, m'lud.
The webpage in question has been set as the homepage, so it appears first."

Judge: "It says it's performed an illegal operation."

Prosecution Lawyer: "Oh, it does that every now and then, m'lud."

Judge - "Right then. This computer is in contempt of court! Case dismissed!"
