There's a Tesco at Canonmills in Edinburgh, built on a sloping site that has used this to create a lower level of parking with much of the car park at and the store at "ground level" - it's a bit quirky.

Also, +1 for a new-ish Sainsbury's built atop it's car park. The best part is obviously the sloping travelator.

Sainsbury's in Forest Hill which was rebuilt in the noughties has a small underground car park with housing above. There is a ground level car park behind the supermarket, but is a council pay and display one.

That's one of the weirdest Sainsbury's I've ever been in - I'm not sure it's changed since the noughties either. This photos is from 2015, but two of those brands had been through several refreshes by that point:


Other stacked stores I can think of: Sainsbury's in Abbey Wood, which is quite new; Waitrose Byres Road (formerly Somerfield, formerly Safeway [City Store]) which has a floor of parking then several storeys of flats above it; the former Whole Foods in Giffnock (ramp here - also formerly a Safeway); and Tesco in Maryhill, which has a disused railway tunnel beneath the car park that's been safeguarded in case anyone decides to bring it back into use.

Asda Birkenhead was built with a underground car park and before it returned in the late 00's, the original asda that closed in the early 90's had a roof top car park.

Forest Hill Sainsbury's was even stranger before the refurb. They had tills at both ends of the store, one by the main road and another at the back for customers using the council car park.

There was always one poor soul who was put on the tills at the car park end, compared to the rest who were at the front.

Since the noughties rebuild, the tills now run parallel from the main road to the car park on one side of the building.

I'm assuming that isn't visible from the ground, which would explain why it hasn't been updated. Odd that it's there in the first place, though, given that SavaCentre's pre-date Google Maps et al (and Sydenham isn't under a major flight path, is it?)...

There's a Sainsbury's on the outskirts of Manchester that has the pre-1999 logo on the roof too.

I think it was down to one of the later Sainsbury family CEOs or chairmans who went everywhere by helicopter.
