A quick chat with Herr Sput regarding the current atmospheric conditions reminded me of a great phrase regarding the humidity that I hadn't heard in a while.

"Oooohhh, it's a bit close."

What a fabulous phrase!

Now of course this thread could go one of a couple of ways. Either we discuss how close / muggy / clammy / sweaty it is or it becomes a discussion about those bizarre phrases that describe a situation perfectly but we're not completely sure why.

Or of course it could become a marriage of both to create one glorious super thread. You decide.

I always took "close", as in humid, to be "close to rain", but I might be wrong. Its an oft used phrase round here.

My favourite word to describe atmospheric conditions is 'dank'.

I have an air-conditioned office. Most of my co-researchers do not have air-conditioned offices.

I have declared their offices "Clammy"

OK, am I the only person who has never, ever heard this phrase?

I personally stick to close and muggy. Clammy can put rather unpleasant images in my head.
