I'm still driving on my licence, issued in 1976. It doesn't have a photo and I've no intention of replacing it - it states that it's valid until 2018.

Have these people never updated their passport either? The DVLA make it even easier than the Passport peopl as they send you a letter to remind you long before it expires.

Mine expired last week and I've just sent mine off... amazing how young I look in the 1999 photo compared with now

Nope, some of the commenters are outraged because the DVLA doesn't have their up-to-date contact details. HOW DARE THEY NOT BE PSYCHIC! Plus, I do believe that's another punishable offence.

Indeed, there is a fine of up to £1,000 for failing to notify DVLA of a change of address for either a driving licence or vehicle registration.

The Mail ran a similar article about six months ago and nothing has changed, so it seems pointless to raise the issue again. There is an expiry date on EVERY driving licence, so the excuse "I thought it was for life" isn't a very good defence, regardless of whether someone has a photocard or paper-only licence.

Since the Mail commentators normally rant about individuals accepting personal responsibility rather than relying on the 'nanny state', it seems rather odd that such responsibility doesn't extend to actually reading the dates on a driving licence!

I don't really think that's comparable to stupid mail causing a fuss over nothing.

I mean its written in express alarmist speak but that story on the whole is actually rather bad. i mean there's all sorts of problems there with the illegality of employers behavior.

Absolutely, but the Express, instead of going after the employers, is making out that it's the migrant workers who are to blame, by being willing to work for £2 an hour. Their aim is way off.
