I appreciate Timemachine is a useful back-up if your computer goes squewiff, but if going away I always hide my back-up.Nini wrote:Doesn't seem that odd, would you usually hide your backup?rts wrote:Oddly though they constanstly leave it plugged in, even when going away, so chances are if we are broken in to, their back-up will vamoose as well.
I'm not going to leave my only back-up of music, personal photographs, to be stolen by some scoundrell intent on nicking my laptop.

I just want to acknowledge Row's rather excellent use of "vamoose" and "squewiff".
I'm not saying that in itself it's a bad precaution, just that down that path madness lies. If I worried about burglary, I'd have to worry about fire, floods, magnetic fields, viruses etc as well... all seem equally likely and destructive. In truth theft is probably the least likely cause of data loss.rts wrote:Don't be a prat, Chris. If you're going away on holiday, it takes two seconds to shove your external hardrive somewhere discrete.
Sorry if you took my comment personally, the tone of your reaction implies I offended you.

i hide my backup drive also when i go out for any amount of time, i don't live in fear of burglary, it's just that i have 12 years worth of work on my computer (photos, code, etc) i couldn't afford to lose that, everything else i can replace on insurance, but treasured photos cannot be replaced - it's not irrational and it's no different to a company having a backup device on multiple sites - it's just there to spread the risk.cdd wrote:I'm not saying that in itself it's a bad precaution, just that down that path madness lies.
