Today has seen GCap start its daytime networking, GMG are starting more and more networking in the evenings and at weekends and TLRC has today sold more of its loss making radio stations.

So, is there money to be made in local radio and, if so, is there a future for it or will we move to a system of networked shows with local opt-outs.

On the other hand, TLRC managed to find buyers for its stations - some went to the Laser group but others to private individuals. These stations, the likes of Ivel, Pennine and Dune, are very small stations that I think could work and make money if they go back to their roots - being very local, more akin to commercial 'community' radio stations.

So which of the two options will prevail - or is there going to be a healthy mix for some time to come. I'm really not sure... I'd like to think option two will work. But can it in today's economic climate?

I'd be interested in your thoughts!

GCap and GMG stations make money, but they can make even more by doing all this networking.
