I know marksi has already enquired from me on YouTube, but I don't have the classic Primark Christmas ad - which was still running south of the Border (as "Penneys... got a whole lot of things for Christmas... etc.) in the late 90s. I do have an ad for a Primark Sale shown on HTV West in 1985 with the pree-mark pronounciation, as well as an ad for a photography shop in Bristol which was "opposite pry-mark".

Re: Dunnes, do they still do the PA announcements instore which start "Attention customers. Better value in our (X) department..." and ended with "And remember customers, Dunnes Stores for better value everyday"? Very twee but made a change from the 70s-style muzak (cf. UTV slide adverts until 1992) they used to play in the store. I remember doing work experience at school at the Dunnes in Portadown in 1998, when they were still used in-store, and they told me they used to pre-record the announcements every Sunday for the week ahead, usually by one of the managers who hated having to do them.

(Why, for some reason, does this post read like something Tumble Tower would post? Sh*t, I'm off down the pub to drown my sorrows now I've realised that.)

Every time I glance at this thread title I can hear, "preemark" in my head.

I'm clearly the highly suggestible type.

Well this person works at Primark and listen to how he pronounces it.

Extra points if you can get through the whole thing without falling asleep. Interesting the youtube literacy rate is far higher than normal for this video.

Ugh, stopped once he mentioned his haircut. He's from Middlesbrough though, not Norn Ir'n and it seems only those of NI habitation use the Pree pronunciation.

So, in all you're wrong, cdd.

Oh, you should have had the stamina to make it all the way through! It's like it's been taken straight out of the office by that character Tim. Except I think he's deadly serious, and has an amazing talent for sapping energy and hope.

In Dundee, it seems many of the natives (possibly because of the long-standing NI/Dundee relationship of sorts) seemingly do call it Preemark, once causing a dramatic battle of wits between my naive Fifer Pry, and my Dundonian flatmate's insistant Pree. If it wasn't for my other four helpfully English flatmates, this could have been a difficult one to win.

Main problem I have with Pr[i|ee|y]mark is that their shirts only go up to XL size, those of us who require XXL are out of luck

That's fairly poor strategy considering so many obese people seem to shop there.

Never!

Birdsong hinges on contributions such as that, and "I watched Madonna on BBC3 and it was shit. What's all this 'street' look about. She's in her 50s for God's sake..."

etc.
