The Heathrow terror attempt is not something a group of Islamist terrorists will wake up one day and say to each other " ok lets go and blow up a couple of planes over the Atlantic today" . It takes time even years to plan a job like that.

It's a good point you make though about the security at airports not being tightened as soon as MI5 and Goverment caught a whiff of this plot. A very reckless game they were playing there.

I have no doubt there are thousands of other young men and women living and willing to to die for their cause in this country. For every one caught there is another who will step into his shoes. They're just all busy plotting and planning.

I'm not about to get all neurotic and panicky about it though.

It takes many months of investigation to uncover this plot, and only after the plot is thwarted and 18 arrested, do they radically tighten up the carry-on baggage policy. Does that mean they had no idea during those months of the plot's objective?

If they did suspect that something was cooking during the investigation, would it not have been more prudent to start tightening the carry-on luggage policy during that time, and not AFTER the arrests?

I see why you say that, miss h, but it's not quite what I mean.

The risk of being killed or injured by Islamic terrorism is still incredibly small, in comparison to other risks in life. I, for one, don't believe it's worth all the draconian laws coming in and proposed to fight it - freedoms that millions of UK men died protecting twice last century.

This whole thing, like the military occupation of Heathrow/Gatwick one month before the start of the Iraq war, stinks of a Government trying to justify its foreign policy.

However, between the "1200" of them in the UK and the "40,000-60,000" in the world (according to the CIA), they are either very lazy terrorists or incredibly incompetent. They only seem to average one big act of terrorism around the world a year - I am sure that 40,000-60,000 radical towelheads could manage more than that.

It's not unreasonable to think that if causing terror is their aim, they should be out doing more terrorism. However, they don't.

The lack of regular Islamic terrorism, here or anywhere else around the world, suggests that it is not as much of a threat as we are led to believe.

I do have a lot of doubt about that. Actions speak louder than words, and while there may be plenty of people disgusted with British foreign policy, Islamic and non-Islamic, only the very nuttiest actually go ahead and do something.

The lack of much happening (and I personally think this latest terror scare is probably as reliable as the other anti-terror stuff) on the bombing front suggests that your radical Islamists, just like everybody else is the world, are full of shit and brave words but never actually do anything about it.

That's a circular argument though, James.

At some point, the security measures had to be tightened, whether last week or two years ago.

The supposed bombers would have to work around them at some point, if you get my drift. One could argue that by not tightening them up sooner, and that what the intelligence services produce is more often than not not particularly accurate, they were putting the public at risk by not doing it sooner.

I wouldn't be too keen on flying in paper boilet suits!

Maybe it's time to start vetting every passenger more closely? This will sound racist but maybe it is time to start automatically checking people who have links to places such as Afghanistan, or have "suspicious" surnames.

But what will that solve? Let's not forget, one of those arrested in the last few days was someone who had converted to Islam recently, and in no way looked or seemed like your stereotypical extremist.

They are clever little bastards, which is why those with the brains do the plotting and the brainwashed sods go and blow themselves and others to smithereens for a false idol. GOD!

They are here and this is going to on for years and years to come yet. One of the reasons the IRA are no longer an active terrorist group is because america has ceased funding them. Bin Laden masterinded a plot that has left his followers and sympathisers in awe of him. Why go blow yourself up and go out with a whimper when you can go out with a bang. It's all about the next big job.

An easier way to explain myself would be this... If i had a chance to do an armed robbery. The risks involved are huge. I wouldn't go and do some shitty post office job, i'd go for the biggie. That's how i think these suicide bombers are thinking.
