Obviously it's a natural human trait to be afraid of death in some way. If we didn't we'd all be jumping of buildings willy-nilly! Darwinism and all that.

The obvious answer is that we start as dust and end up as dust. But that's so difficult to accept, or even begin to imagine. I mean, how can something just be nothing - without breathing, without anything? Not only is it hard to contemplate but it's painful. There's no doubt that I have a real fear of death -- it's nature's way of ensuring the population levels don't skyrocket.

I feel that my view on death will change for the better as I get older. I feel I'll get more and more bored with life on this planet and eventually enjoy the idea of an ultimate rest. But until then I'll continue to lose sleep over it at night.

Natural selection would surely make sure that those of an inclination to jump out of windows and kill themselves wouldn't pass on their suicidal genes to the next generation. So the trait would very quickly die out, and never get the chance to spread widely through the population.
