Thought he was an assistant, deputy, junior pot washer, waiting for promotion to kitchen rat catcher.

That promotion is so close i can taste it...

The cheque was from work actually, i didnt get my time sheet into my boss before the paying in date. It's really irratating now shes changed the system, it used to be cash in hand which wierdly was easier to save money. Now its monthly, directly paid into my account. Which is plain irratating...

You'll find that with any job nowadays. The Inland Revenue want everything on the books. I think true freelancers (those with more than one job - though even that depends on a number of factors) can still invoice an employer - however many of the freelancers I know are being forced to move onto the books.

It's very much handier to have it paid direct into the bank account anyway IMO.

Being paid monthly though can be a bit of a bollox for some people though, tis how I'm paid and I hear many complaints from co-workers about how most of it went in the first week...

Oh, and on the original topic at hand, more bank holidays mean more time and a half *plus bonus* for me so I certainly wont say no.

As mentioned on TV Forum, its been a Bank Holiday this week in Northern Ireland.

Does this mean they get more that England, or is there one that only we get? Same with Scotland?

I'm pretty certain that Scotland get a few more than England and Wales and Northern Ireland get more than Scotland, Andrew.

Northern Ireland has two more bank holidays than England - March 17th and July 12th, though many places also observe July 13th as a holiday.

I'd love to have a Bank Holiday somewhere in the middle of October. It is a hell of a long slog from August to Christmas, and towards Christmas everyones batteries need re-charging, so one solution is to have a BH.

However, Britain is a lot different than it was say 25 years ago. There are people working throughout the night in supermarkets and petrol stations*, so working patterns have changed greatly since then, and so not everyone will get to benefit from having an extra bank holiday.

* Apart from Pembrokeshire, which since 2000 has been going BACKWARDS in time. Between 0000-0600 there is only ONE petrol station open for the whole of Pembrokeshire & Ceredigion! I mean it's not that bloody rural round here. Milford Haven is Britains third biggest port, surrounded by huge oil refineries. Bloody small-minded Pembrokeshire council bastard jobsworths...

I take it that's a "getting over it" holiday, Mark, a bit like January 2nd in Scotland.

Indeed, although traditionally we didn't get 26th December as a holiday, as Christmas has always been very much less important to us than Hogmanog.

In fact, many of the manual workers used to work til lunchtime on Christmas day!
