There an election this year.....
Indeed The Sun have endorsed Labour at the 11th hour. I wonder how long that front page has been waiting in the wings for 'Time for a new manager (and we don't mean sack Southgate' reads awfully like the big sports news is supposed to be England out of the Euros, but we're still (somehow) in them.
Monday's paper had a page that contradicted itself. A columnist (Trevor Kavanagh) saying "sleepwalking into Starmageddon", and an editorial saying "Labour's plan to turbo charge house building from day one is sorely needed". Two items on the same page, one says vote Labour, the other says vote Conservative. They should've chosen who to support before that column appeared.
Huh? Tomorrow's front pages shouldn't be out yet, and today's is a story about footballer Andy Carroll.cwathen wrote: ↑Wed 03 Jul, 2024 16.18 Indeed The Sun have endorsed Labour at the 11th hour. It’s already been revealed for tomorrow.JAS84 wrote: ↑Wed 03 Jul, 2024 18.25Huh? Definitely through gritted teeth though, but they were looking increasingly out of touch by not getting behind Starmer.
On the eve of the big day I've really tried to rack my brains over what I'd count as genuine lasting achievements the Conservatives have made over the last 14 years. Honestly, the only things I can think of are carrier bags charges (though that was the Lib Dems in coalition), gay marriage, £2 bus fares and forcing the Mayor of London to expand ULEZ across the capital. I think I heard on a podcast a while back that elderly poverty was down on where it began, not so much everyone else.
That's truly it, a dreadful record and I'm so glad it's finished. Austerity never ended, I've never felt more of a wealth divide than now, it feels like there's no investment anywhere with the HS2 cancellation topping the bill, Brexit has been a complete top to bottom failure that will gradually need to be reversed, at great unnecessary expense to the country. Genuine endless failure across successive governments from the same party. It's been an extraordinarily miserable ride and I do hope Labour can enact genuine change quite soon despite the total mess and lack of money they're inheriting.

Probably the small matter of knowing that the TV News won't be able to do a newspaper review tomorrow morning. Therefore get the cover published in the afternoon to get the free publicity from the tv news.JAS84 wrote: ↑Wed 03 Jul, 2024 18.25Huh? Newspaper endorsements don't have the clout they used to. The Sun knows the Tories are out and would rather back the winner than who they ideologically agree with.
TVF's London Lite.
Does Metropol's parody of the Decision '79 title sequence still exist anywhere?
Anyone else think maybe it's time we had a look at this? It's already a rather 1920s rather than 2020s view that political coverage on broadcast media whilst the polls are open represents possible undue influence on who to vote for whereas print media somehow doesn't - particularly when most broadcast media doesn't go as far as actually naming a party they endorse in a way that a lot of print media does. And of course that outside of the 15 hour voting media broadcast media can and does report whatever it wants on politics.Probably the small matter of knowing that the TV News won't be able to do a newspaper review tomorrow morning. Therefore get the cover published in the afternoon to get the free publicity from the tv news.
But now that both broadcast and print media have websites (I say 'now' like they haven't for the last 20+ years) it's singularly ridiculous that the likes of BBC/ITV/Sky have to have their websites conforming to the same gagging order whilst the polls are open but newspaper websites can tell you who to vote for, at the same time. So websites have to conform to the rules of their 'source' rather than being viewed as their own category? Surely a news website is a news website and if there are going to be rules they should be the same for all?
Would more political discussion on polling day in broadcast media not also potentially encourage people minded not to bother to actually go out and vote rather than the somewhat surreal current situation where the single biggest thing happening in the country on the day is essentially a banned topic during the brief window when the people can actually have any influence on it?
Not sure what is more surreal; that, or the fact that Wimbledon was on 35 minutes before the exit poll in a general election? Either way lets all strap in for the ride!
So what did everyone think of that election? I was surprised when the exit poll appear, it proved what I was thinking Labour wouldn't get beyond 1997 result.
I have to wonder why So many polls were thinking labour would get 450 and the Tories would get 80 odd seats. Lib dems could have gotten to 80 as some of the tory/LB wins were in the 10-100s.
Did the Tories "super Majority" disenfranchise people to come out to vote thus the missing 8% of turnout never come out because they were like will Labour won?
