Old supermarket signage

I can’t tell from the picture if it’s an old fluorescent or an LED baton replacement but it could be it’s on an emergency lighting circuit? In my previous career I had a lot of facilities type things to look after and we had a small number of lights like this that stayed on all the time.

The floor tiles in the Foods section in M&S Lewisham has little green diamonds in them - I'm not aware of the vintage but certainly haven't seen them elsewhere.
Probably doesn't fall under the remit of 'old signage'.
Haven't a picture of them but will make sure to next time I'm in there.

80's/90's that I believe, Sunderland had it until it closed last month. Newcastle used to have them aswell and that opened in that period. I know as I used to try and jump between all the diamonds going for the bus at Haymarket as a kid.

This may be too niche even for Metropol but... following from the discussion about M&S, every time I visit Warrington I am intrigued by these old light fittings all around the edges of the store - a fluorescent tube fitting next to a pair of old spotlight fittings presumably? Clearly have been supplanted by the newer spotlights - but was surprised yesterday to find one single fluorescent remains and it even works! This is the kind of thing that excites me anyway... apologies for the bad angle.



At first I thought it was illuminating a sign but you can clearly see the new spotlight aimed at it anyway.

The store is about to go under another refurb (and expansion of the food hall) so may be the last time these fittings are still in place.

Speaking of M&S, it just reminded me of this video of the Metrocentre in 1987 which has a large bit on the M&S store at around 7 minute mark, some right nostalgia before the place turned into a bland white box and take your pick whether I'm talking about M&S or the whole Metrocentre as it could be either.

Ah it might be. I did have a good look at it and I'm certain it was a traditional fluorescent and not an LED despite the cooler colour temperature. At one of the entrances, there are three strip lights placed where three of the old fluorescent tube fittings were, but they are clearly completely new LED fittings with a plastic surround and cover.

Found a couple of photos that show what the old fittings looked like anyway. They were probably first put in when the store had a major refurb and extension in 2009/10.

Not exactly 'old signage', but one thing that always seem to avoid rebrands are lorries. I mean, the amount of green Co-op lorries and Morrisons lorries I've seen sporting the old logos quite recently is quite unbelievable, since both of those supermarkets updated their branding in 2016 - eight years ago now!!

You think that's bad, quite a few M&S lorries still have the Only at Your M&S branding on them!

What's slightly worse is that the logo isn't in Helvetica, but Arial.

Not exactly 'old signage', but one thing that always seem to avoid rebrands are lorries. I mean, the amount of green Co-op lorries and Morrisons lorries I've seen sporting the old logos quite recently is quite unbelievable, since both of those supermarkets updated their branding in 2016 - eight years ago now!!

They have a (roughly) ten year life.

Sometimes a few well placed stickers can obscure old branding - Tesco were able to 'update' the logo on most of their plain white 90s lorries with one, and Sainsburys' lorries had the 'making life taste better' slogan obscured with an orange rectangle, which was pretty visible over the patterned backdrop but did the job. Sometimes things just have to run their course.

Worth remembering that many of the society-owned Co-ops being delivered to will still have that signage and indeed were still opening or being refurbished with that 2007 logo as late as last year. I think there's even a couple of group stores with that fascia (with dodgy cheap hanging sign addition).

I'm a bit disappointed that the new Tesco lorry livery doesn't include their coat of arms, because it's brilliant.

That actually reminds me a few weeks ago I saw a Tesco lorry with the ancient "You shop we drop" tag line on it.
What does their new livery look like? If I'm honest off the top of my head I can't remember any other Tesco lorry liveries, apart from the you shop we drop and the one that has a giant Tesco wordmark in Cyan on a blue background

The Tesco Express in town has had its main outside sign updated to the new one with the branch name and Est 2012.

Interestingly it has the lower 15% in that stupid wood effect. it looks awful.

Yeah, wood effect seems to be the 'in' thing at the moment for shop frontages. I've noticed a few takeaways with it in the last couple of years.

I mentioned about the MFG-owned Morrisons Daily petrol station shops in the Morrisons thread, those have something very similar, with a fake wood effect sign then a grey protruding bit in the middle containing the logo.
