First sighting of a V6 NCR self scan in Tesco Montrose. This particular branch still had v4 machines last year. With the old vending machine coin slot.

Also new concept in house cafe. V much emphasising the food is the same as on the shelf.

Didn't M&S used to push this? If you like these scones, you can buy your own in the food hall.

Tesco now recruiting for 'mystery new format' stores. Apparently they will be run as a separate operation from the rest of their store estate.

Strongly reckoned that they are going to tackle Lidl and Aldi head on and the new stores will not use the Tesco name.

The rumored name is Jack's as a subsidery of Tesco has lodged a trademark application.

The name is after founder Jack Cohen.

I just don’t get this obsession with taking on Aldi and Lidl. Concentrate on sorting out your own fucking offer before you try and fool people into walking into a store they don’t realise is just a Tesco but with shitter shelving.

And, presumably, with a lack of brands and is quick to get round. And maybe some bulk buys. That alone is enough of a proposition to appeal to a proportion of the Aldi and Lidl demographic.

This announced strategic partnership with Carrefour will presumably bear fruit for this soon - the reintroduction of pretend brands should help too.

Wonder if they'll support Clubcard in Jack's?

So, a trip to the big ASDA today. As in one of the big hypermarket ones not the normal big supermarket.

They have replaced their trolleys with trolleys made by trollex, a nasty cheap company, rather than the standard wanzl models.

Suffice to say, every single one is already broken. Bad wheels, clunky ride, battered metal, generally too light and therefore bouncy. Nasty stuff. Not sure if its a wal mart standard but lets hope they're shown the door when Sainsburys take over.

Meanwhile, they now have scan and go at asda. (The scanner holsters on the trolley handles are also all broken, because cheap) Except it's dreadful
  • You log in using your mobile phone number, because there's no loyalty card you can use. This means the registration process takes *ages*
  • The hardware is the excellent symbol handsets that are being rolled out in Tesco to replace the battered old Motorola ones. This should be excellent as they've got an amazing screen, great scanning speed, and a 3D scanner. However the software is shocking. Every scan requires a "loading" chug, they're seemingly running android, and then it only displays the most recent item, no list, which is absurd.
  • The checkout experience. In Tesco, you scan a barcode on the top of the till, press "no" to "did you have any problems" and the whole thing appears on the self scan via wifi.

The Asda scan and go checkout experience
  • Walk up to till
  • Realise the only tills that take the handsets are half way up the shop for no reason
  • Scan QR code on till screen
  • Press no on screen
  • Press no on screen
  • Press no on screen for the third time, why won't it bloody work?
  • No finally decides to work
  • Giant barcode appears on the handset screen
  • Wait for shopping to appear
  • Discover you need to scan giant barcode on the scanner of the self scan
  • Wait
  • Discover you can only pay by card despite the machine being a full fledged NCR fastlane and physically having all the cash input options
  • Hang up scanner in weird holder from the ark that only holds three, rather than the smart wooden ones tesco have that hold 12.
Not impressed.

Went to the big Tesco, with the same hardware, and it was a joy to use with the proper software. The big Tesco Extra at Kingsway has the new handsets, however Tesco Riverside and South Road still has the old ones. Although by the look of it, they sent all the good handsets to the other stores and retired the flakier ones.
