Yeah same in Newport. The Argos was plonked pretty much where the old AV range was.

Also... Power banks... cables... computer accessories.... what use are they on the Isle of Wight?

At my nearest Sainsbury's Argos Lloyd's Pharmacy, the Argos took up the space of the clothing section, which moved downstairs and took out the tech area, that had only been introduced 4 years before when they got their extension built.

At my nearest Sainsbury's Argos Lloyd's Pharmacy Habitat, the changes seem to have had less impact, but they have again only taken space from the non-food areas. The Habitat section was full of (still expensive) clearance items, and was dead as a doornail.

Both Argoses didn't seem to be terribly busy, but then the new system means that the item has often been picked before I've even paid for it. And the new tablets don't crash when you ask for it to sort from lowest to highest price, which helps.

The one by my house (Truro Works?), appears to be closing this coming Sunday, which will be annoying as it leaves a fairly big gap where there's no convenience store (except the Spar in the station car park, and that's a proper dump).

I'm hoping it's for a much needed refurb, but the signage just says it's closing, so I'm not holding up much hope.

No Argos added in my Sainsbury's, instead they replaced the fish counter with a branded sushi one which I can't recall the name.

They look to be refurbishing the one at Nether Edge (which is essentially a skip) so hopefully that one is getting a similar refurb - I imagine they were converted to Sainsbury's at a similar point.

The scan as you go terminals have been reskinned to the new font and colours. A few UI improvements too such as showing the price of a single item when you're buying several, and clearer offers.

The Motorola ones have always looked like that this way, the Symbol ones look a bit different.

On a recent visit to Tesco in Bridlington, I noticed a couple of things.

Firstly, they have gained Scan and Go (though it wasn't in use when I went). The handsets had much bigger screens than the Motorola ones I've used (and were perhaps touchscreen)?

Secondly, the self-service area is a combined Scan and Go and self-service area, with the updated software (which looks a lot nicer).

Erm, no. As we've had the motorolas for about two years and they've only just been updated. They're not new hardware, the blue labels are peeling and there are a few that have clearly been dropped and have a screw loose inside them.

As I said, it's a cosmetic rather than functional update. But they've got a new look on the same hardware.

Integrated SAYS/self scan areas are probably a good thing, although it does remove the queue jump advantage of SAYS. Are the new machines FastLane V6 or still V5?

That said, you can use SAYS at manned checkouts too, although it causes a reaction similar to handing over a Scottish £5 in certain parts of England...

Apparently there is a new UI on some of the Tesco self scan machines that is as shite as the Sainsburys one they ditched. Tesco Metro in town apparently has it. Might take a wander down tomorrow as all the other tescos remain on the old UI.

That said, the Express in the city centre (not to be confused with the Metro I just mentioned, which is 500 yards along the road, or the Express by the casino, which is 500 yards up the road, or the Tesco Extra, which is half a mile down the road), yes that Tesco had a sort of card only super fast self scan with no scale. However it also had only a 2D single line barcode scanner which was poo. They've been out of action for months. Well still on, just set to disabled.

Meanwhile the main fastlane tills are the ones that, infuriatingly, have the scale on the left, and up.

Also why are tesco the only place clever enough to lower the shelf so you can park a trolley over it?

Sorry I wasn't clear, by 'this way' I meant 'around here'. They definitely had that font and I'm fairly sure those colours when they were installed in Nottingham and Sheffield around 2015. I'll have a dig through my pictures and see if I can find one.

My local branch of Tesco has had the new self checkout software since August. It was ropey as hell to begin with, dying in various ways when you tried to use Tesco Bank cards (I think the integrated clubcard confused them...). It's pretty snappy now though. The design is much better than the Sainsburys one. These are V6 - although there are plenty of V6 units running the old software too.

Oh, and apparently that Sainsburys software is being rolled out again (albeit without the "cloud" backend). I saw it for the first time in a supermarket last week, in Bispham. Joy of joys.

Changing tack somewhat, one of the advisory firms is recommending Booker shareholders vote against the Tesco buyout.
