Thanks, that confirms what I vaguely remembered reading elsewhere: the Esso/Shop'N Drives are former Total sites acquired by Rontec.

Since converting them to Shop'N Drive, Rontec has sold some of them to ASDA as standalone petrol stations with convenience-format stores. I visited one recently and found the range of goods in the shop really disappointing compared to what Tesco Express are capable of doing with a similar sized footprint.

Back on the subject of Total, who ceased their forecourt operations and withdrew their brand from the UK in 2010, I drove past this petrol station in Shropshire recently, and was surprised that it's still selling fuel with the all the Total branding in place.

From a brand protection point of view I'd have thought that Total Worldwide, who still have a strong forecourt retail brand outside of the UK, would be bothered by an independent garage selling fuel under its name when the quality of fuel, standards and maintenance of the pumps, etc, has no longer got any connection with Total.

In terms of Total garages - there seems to be one chain of them who have been particularly slow at changing them -

This one in Nottingham (which will transform in to an Esso when you move towards Nottingham by one movement)

This one in Sheffield (which still has those hilariously old pumps despite the very swish "Synergy" Esso branding)

Both only transferred last year. While trading as Total, I saw both being serviced by Gulf tankers - did they take on a rump of the former Total business?

Just up the road from that Sheffield Total/Esso is a BP Shop 'n' Drive - is that a rarity?

The new brand was designed to compliment the Esso Fuel brand to create a strong visual harmony between the two brands.

"The aim is to create a memorable and distinctive brand that will change people’s perceptions and present a modern, slick retail environment"

So we'll make it look like it's come out of the 70s.

Still, if it means we get petrol at these prices, I'm all for it.

Will the signs be in the right shape now, or will they still be stretched into all sorts of shapes?

Oddly enough I don't think it really fits the name though… the new one feels a bit dour with that full stop at the end and the grey background, whereas the previous one was cheap but a bit more cheerful (I think it's the tick that makes it).

Well I like it, and they are not all stretched to fit ALL OF THE SPACE.

It appears it's replaced this logo too, which went on a couple of stores but eventually became the corporate logo:
