I miss when Hellfire and Plymouth used to come on here and extoll the virtues of their slow cookers.

So, by way of a tribute to that once great Metropol tradition, this is the official dedicated slow cooker thread. The clocks have gone back, so a new slow cooking season is upon us. So get sharing your recipes and tips here.

It's what this place has been lacking.

I once stuck a load of braising steak in the slow cooker and, to be honest with you, it looked a bit shite. One jar of Madras sauce later, however, and it was a meal fit for a king.

A colleague bought me one, along with a "200 slow-cooker recipes" book.

I tried it with a lovely cut of beef, but it came out tasting of, well, stew - which I've never been a fan of. And the veg were mushy. I tried it as a rice cooker, but it seems such a fankle when rice take 12 minutes to do properly from scratch.

I may enter the whole kit and kaboodle into a Dimbledraw, as its just taking up worktop space in my kitchen.

My father is a convert to the slow cooker cause; he uses it to cook Guinness casserole during the day when he's at work, and says it marinates the meat and carrotts sufficiently to seal the taste in. While not a big fan of stews and casseroles, I did try some when last at home, and I was impressed enough with it to accept his claim.

He's also used the slow cooker to make curries, but I've not tried a curry made in a slow cooker; I'm happier spending the time cooking the meat on the hob and letting it simmer while I bowl the rice to be honest.

The only casserole I like is Sausage & Bean casserole (with no other veg besides peppers and onions). A pot I bought for a tenner from Wilkos does the trick nicely.
