Haha, as long as they leave off the "EVERYTHING MUST GO!" bit.

A simple in-between option in terms of cost/professional appearance would be for the big chains (supermarkets/oil companies) to get their POS suppliers to issue a couple of each of "Sorry, no fuel", "Sorry, no petrol", "Sorry, no diesel", "Sorry, we're closed" to each site to keep in a store room. Should cover most eventualities and would last for years. That said, they'd probably get lost/chucked out somewhere along the way.

Of course you never know you need this stuff until you do. Sainsbury's clearly reacted to the lockdown panic-buying by giving stores a bunch of cardboard props to place on empty shelves. Unfortunately the text reads "Please bear with us, we're experiencing high demand". However, the gaps now are mostly not down to high demand so it starts to look like you're lying to your customers.
Tesco have these and the sites I've been to have had them out:

It's interesting to know who seems to know how to turn their totems off.

Genuine question. Is this still in the news because of continuing shortages in London/the south east and the usual London/SE view that this therefore equals a countrywide problem?

Yesterday went to my usual sainsburys forecourt and although they had someone marshalling, if anything it was quieter than usual for the time of day. Also did previously mentioned moving house yesterday and my friend who drove the van was able to go straight to his usual garage to to fill it back up with diesel. Obviously there are going to be some supply issues still, but not sure calling it a 'crisis' is still generally warranted on a national level

There's no denying that since panic buying has stopped, the shortages have reduced. However, if you look in the right place, you'll find that there's still shortages all over the place.

It's now also been confirmed that the army is being brought in to drive tankers. Given the newspaper headlines tomorrow, I'm worried that we might be about to see a resurgence in panic buying.

The cycle continues.

"Argh! Terrible shortage is coming!! Be scared!!"
"Oh my God, get as much as you can before it runs out!!"

Thus creating the very shortage people were attempting to circumvent.

A complete self-fulfilling prophesy.

Toilet roll last year. Fuel this year. Can't wait to find out what's next.

The whole thing's ridiculous.

My local Esso hasn't had any fuel since Tuesday.

Looking around various news websites, the signage crisis is as severe as ever:

Looking at that top one, it seems BP provided some sort of template but no-one had a big enough printer?

It's probably a PDF, either a preview of a poster you can order from them or a file which they intend you send to a printshop.

I’m slightly worried it’ll be various Christmas items

One news story saying there may be a shortage of turkeys/puddings/mince pies and everyone will start buying them the minute they come in

Today's highlight was trying to get somewhere at work and a queue of cars (no stereotypes but mostly Audi and BMW) tailing a fuel tanker...

Which had a completely blank HazChem panel and L plates displayed. We followed them ourselves for about 5 minutes as they were travelling in the same direction but it was quite funny that the car at the front of the pack couldn't connect the dots that the L plates might indicate it isn't loaded, fewer people would know that if it's empty the panel displays nothing. Absolute stupidity.

Also an increasing number of cars stopped outside petrol stations with their hazards on, abandoned, as they've run empty queuing. It frustrates me somewhat as within the M25 and particular zones 1/2/3 where I work have reasonable public transport options. But no, the 3L Range Rover must be taken out to get from A to B.

A lot being made of the 5p reduction in fuel duty on the six o'clock news tonight, which was due to take effect at 6pm.

Are petrol stations obliged to change their prices at all, or at exactly 6pm? Or is it all an exercise in perception and spin?
